Big data technology can have a substantial impact on a company’s competitiveness and profitability. Big data is data that cannot be stored in traditional database systems and therefore cannot be queried in the same matter as traditional data. The data of social media is big data. It contents free text, videos, pictures and music files. Using text mining software, companies can query and analysis the data stored on social media in order to gain a competitive edge.
A company that has a chain of fitness centers, can leverage the power of text mining in order to acquire information on whether members have benefited from using their services. CMS has regulations and policies in place that healthcare providers must follow in order to get reimbursed by CMS for healthcare services they provide to CMS members. Providers provide CMS with reports and quality measures data to show they are following the standards. CMS can utilize Big Data technology to gain knowledge about the quality of care patients receive. Healthcare providers distribute surveys to patients and generate reports from these surveys in order to show CMS how patients perceived the quality of care they received. However, online universities can help by utilizing big data technology to search the vast amounts of videos on YouTube for instructional education videos to use as additional teaching material that can be accessed by all their globally dispersed students. The university can also mine social media to analysis student reviews about their learning experience with university. This information can be used to create a strategic plan in order to increase the admission rate and student graduate
