There are numerous benefits using and EHR to perform your job .The reduction in errors alone is enough to argue that every healthcare facility should have an EHR in place with properly trained staff to utilize the software to it’s fullest potential. As more and more healthcare facilities make the transition from paper charts to Electronic Health Records (EHRs), the more these benefits increase. EHRs can be accessed on demand, which is probably the most important benefit to using an EHR to perform your job. Ability to access records on demand saves a whole lot of time which saves money, speeds up reimbursement, and could ultimately also saves lives. There is also no need to buy, store, or maintain a data server, hardware, or software. This saves office space in turn makes for a more spacious and less cluttered work environment. EHRs can also help bring flexibility to the coding profession, giving us the ability to read digital documents directly and solve legibility issues. Having the right EHR can improve the overall workflow and allow us as coders to more efficiently use our expertise and cut down on time spent otherwise on maintaining and accessing a patient’s health record. For example when changes are introduced to an otherwise familiar process such as switching to and implementing a new EHR can be challenging. Adequate training can also pose a challenge to your job as a coder. A lot of times a coder will not receive the training he/she needs to properly navigate and use an EHR. This causes a disruption in workflow. Additionally, if the coding professional does not know all the places that contain provider documentation, there could be a potential increase in missing provider documentation.
