Being involved in my community has influenced my plans for the future and help me developed new skills. I’ve been an active participant at The Bridge afterschool program for twelve years. As I got older, I found myself volunteering by working one on one with students who have struggled with their reading and math skills. As a part of my work I would read along with students and try to pin point vocabulary words that they may have found difficult to pronounce or understand. Spelling the words out or saying the words repeatedly aloud made reading slightly easier to comprehend passages or books better. As for math, I would try to create math problems that was similar to the lessons that they’ve already established in class by breaking down the equations or expressions step by step in a accessible way so that math wasn’t as hard after all. …show more content…

As an athlete myself, I would teach them the basics of how to play a certain sport that were attracting to their interests. During summer camps at The Bridge I would also help Mr. Anthony put together fun activities for the summer and made phone calls out to parents. On the other hand there are other leadership roles that I played in the community. I remember the first time I met Ms.Drucilla, she had asked me if it would be ok for to come and help her hand out lunches and snacks during the summer time. Nearly every day I would try my best to help out as much as possible. If I wasn’t handing out lunches I was either wiping down tables, sweeping, and mopping floors.
