To be a supervisor is indicative in being a good leader, but to be a leader doesn’t mean you are necessarily a good supervisor. As stated by Whisenand & McCain (2015), as a police officer supervisor you can identify your strengths and use them on your journey to be a leader (p.4). When someone becomes a supervisor it is usually because they are doing good work on the job and are promoted to that positon. In order to become a leader a person must display leadership qualities. For example, compassion for others, good listening skills, works well with others, can delegate fairly, and can communicate well with others. Supervisors have the ability to direct, oversee, and guide employees they work among. This is significantly different then exhibiting leadership skills. Effective supervisors continuously look for ways to learn from their peers in addition to actively train and develop them to become future leaders of the organization (Willis, 2011). Supervisors usually carry out administrative duties to ensure that work is performed on time and completed correctly. Supervisor usually just verbally tell others the way things should be done. In the case of being a good leader a person would get down and dirty with other personnel to ensure things are done in a timely manner and correctly. With all that being said, I do believe people have the ability to be both an effective supervisor as well as a good leader. In my personal experience, that hasn’t happen much but it is possible. Many times people would rather be a supervisor in order to have the capability to command over people rather than being an effective leader. Other who strive to be both don’t command over people, but rather listen, works with others on a task, and gives respect in order to receive it from others. Most employees won’t respect you as a supervisor if you do not show equally good leadership abilities on the job
