The career I want to pursue is Physician assistant (PA). I have wanted to become a physician assistant since January of 2010. I become interested in the program after the earthquake that occurs in my home country Haiti. The massive earthquake destroy the President house and most of the country city which left millions of people isolated, misplaced and without a proper health care. Although there was many organizations that attempt to help, one organization stand the most for me. The organization is Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Doctors Without Borders is an organization that works within country around the world to promote proper and advance healthcare to all. I always want a career in the medical field but I never know in which field I should concentrate, after visiting the MSF website I was able to narrow it down. The website was full of information about the organization and I was able to choose a career off the website. My main goal is to work with them so I can make a different in my community or country but also individual around the world that needs help. It’s been more than five years since I choose that career. although I use to think about changing it now I more than focus to achieve my goal. There are many aspects of the profession that interest me such as I can assist in surgery, develop treatment, treat illnesses and conduct physical exam. According to the AAPA the recertification requirements were updated in 2014. The recertification which used to be every six years is now expanded to every ten years. According to the Physician Assistant speaker, Dr. Larry Collins stated PAs must earn 100 hours of continuing medical education (CME) every two years. The way those hours received is up to the individual. Some ways an individual can obtain those hours is by sitting in classroom or by participate in conferences. A program I plan to join is the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). By joining the AAPA I will keep up to date to recent clinical issues, have access to peer-reviewed journal and monthly journal published by the AAPA itself. The AAPA have over 400 CME activities PA can use to keep up to date with the recertification process. Another benefit individual can receive by joining the organization is getting discount for insurance and travel. Another program I plan in joining is the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants (FAPA). The FAPA is the state organization in the state that is promoting the PA via public education efforts. The FAPA have two national conferences each year, by being a member of the FAPA I would be invited to the conference and earn continuing medical hours toward my recertification.
