Let It Be, a popular hit by the Beatles, was written in 1969. Paul McCartney, a member of the band, wrote this song after he dreamt about his mother who had died when he was only 14. In his dream, his mother whispered the words “let it be” to him at which point the song was born. Let It Be was recorded January 22nd-31st and April 30th of 1969 and January 3rd-4th and April 1st of 1970. It was recorded inside and on the rooftop of Apple Studios and Abbey Road Studio One. During their time together, the members of The Beatles experimented with several different drugs. Drugs played a major role in the career of the Beatles as they influenced many of the songs as well as played a significant role on the bonding the band shared. Each band member had his own preference of drugs. However, the most significant impact drugs had on the Beatles were due from Preludin, cannabis, and LSD for reasons that were quite different.
You will be hard pressed to find someone over the age of 25 that has not heard at least one song by the band out of New Jersey, Bon Jovi. This song represents the Beatles’ returning to their instrumental roots from The Quarrymen with Paul’s bass, George and Lennon’s acoustic guitars, and Ringo’s percussion forming the main instruments throughout the piece. This song comes at a time when Lennon lyrics and tonal timbre proved susceptible to Bob Dylan’s influence , causing Lennon to impersonate Dylan’s vocal style as he searched for his own. This side of the album also illustrates the huge collaborative effort that George Martin and the Beatles put into creating our listening experience, as the lyrics and song titles of the first side of the album present the background for this piece. Lennon builds on this background by detailing how he feels that he must conceal his emotions from the world, especially after his mother’s death. “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” demonstrates the beginning of an introspective, yet simpler Lennon who begins to reveal his emotions through his songs, and the album’s structure serves as a base for the story of Lennon’s piece.

Trombley and her staff researched record sales from local stores, and the request lines to see what the kids wanted to listen too. For the music industry, the Big 8’s Top 30 charts were their Bible. These free charts were “eagerly snapped up by groovy teens.” Decorated in bright colors, these charts allowed local children to follow their favorite song on the Top 30 list. In March 1970, “Let it Be” by the Beatles was number one on the charts, fell to number 2 four weeks later, and by May 11th, was completely off the charts. Today, these charts are “pop music memorabilia” and crazy stories have been heard that these Top 30 charts were used as wallpaper in teen’s bedrooms.
For this week’s assignment, we are asked to look for a song that is inspired by an older song. It can sound like it, or it can borrow lyrics from it. After I read the assignment and understood what is being asked from us, I then jumped in the opportunity to research about it. I never realized that most hits nowadays are derived from old songs, it’s actually amazing. In early 1970 the band Queen was formed. Freddie Mercury on vocals, Brian May on guitar, Roger Taylor on drums and Mike Gross on bass. They had known each other for years. All living in the town of Kensington in Britain, sometimes even living together. Brian and Roger belonged to a band called Smile, and Freddie was a very talented vocalsit playing for the band Ibex. They decided to join forces, to better themselves, and their chances of obtaining fame and fortune. After a few months with only a few gigs Mike Gross left the band. He was replaced by Barry Mitchell, who only played a few gigs with them. After a few short months they were looking for their third bass player. Roger, was at a party one night and was introduced to John Deacon, an electronics major at the University of London and a good bass player. The two hit it off, and Deacon became the new member of Queen.
