Prior to the Victorian era, men in England maintained cleanly shaven faces. With the mid-eighteen hundreds came a widespread shift toward facial hair in a multitude of styles (Camellia). The ability to grow whiskers began to be regarded as a sign of manhood. In pictures and photographs from the era, it is rare to find a male, past the age of manhood, depicted without facial hair in some capacity. As the century continued, the preferred style of facial hair grew progressively longer, bushier, and more pronounced (Nunn), but it remained “stylish for men to wear facial hair of all sizes and descriptions” (Camellia).
In another northern European portrait by Jan Van Eyck we can see a man. This portrait proves that men had lots of freedom when it came to deciding on their facial hair. In the pictures above we can see a man with a full beard, a group of men with pointy goatees and this painting portrays a clean shaven man. His eyebrows are sparse as well and this portrait also demonstrates that turbans and head covers were not for women only.

The Nile River was a true miracle to early Egyptians. It runs in northeast Africa through the center of Egypt (Doc A). It flows into the Mediterranean Sea up north (Doc A). The Nile has two main water sources - Lake Tana, originating in the highlands of Ethiopia flowing into the Blue Nile which empties into the Nile, and Lake Victoria, flowing into the White Nile carrying water to the Nile River (Doc A). It is located between the Western Desert and the Eastern Desert (Doc A). The Nile ran through ancient Egypt, giving early Egyptians all necessities to life. It was considered holy by early people (Doc B). Festivals were even held for the life it provided (Doc B). The Nile River shaped ancient Egypt by providing all required

The beard, which was worn in full at the beginning of the twelfth century, was modified both as to shape and length. At first it was cut in a point, and only covered the end of the chin. But the next fashion was to wear it so as to join the moustaches. Generally moustaches went out of fashion. Beards were worn only by country people, who, desired to preserve a "remembrance of their participation in the Crusades." At the end of the twelfth century, all chins were shaved.

The short story and the movie use different objects to represent this idea, but they are both still present throughout. In the movie, Walter’s new boss at Life Magazine and all of his closest advisors have beards. These beards represent the idea of masculinity and having power. In today’s society, beards are viewed as a way of showing manliness. This is important because Walter does not have a beard for much of the movie, but when he comes back from finding Sean O’Connell, he suddenly has a beard and you can tell that he is beginning to develop as a character (Stiller). When he has the beard, he stands up to his boss and defends himself with confidence. The viewer can tell that Walter has changed and the beard is a key indicator of it. In the short story, the idea of masculinity is not represented as strongly, but it is still present within the story. Cars and driving fast are often associated with being manly. When Walter and his wife are driving into town, she yells at him for going too fast and tells him to slow down. She says, “Not so fast! You’re driving too fast!” (Thurber 1), and yells at him to go slower. This shows Walter’s lack of a masculine side and that he allows his wife to control him, which we never see change in the short story. Nevertheless, masculinity is represented by beards and cars in the stories and exposes Walter’s lack of
Blackbeard left a lasting impression on the minds of millions through his image and various plunders. Taking on the role as an actor in order to scatter fear among others, ironically helped by those who were considered “morally righteous” spreading his pessimistic image through the portrait he painted of wickedness, in an attempt to discourage others from following suite. To establish his scandalous image, Blackbeard grew a beard as black as his heart. In the 1700’s, beards on men were considered savage and unsophisticated.
Rastafarians appearances and beliefs distinguish them from what society dictated them to be. Amongst themselves hair culture began in 1934 with the origination of members growing beard and being called the bearded men. The Dreadful and Sons of Thunder where the ones who elected to “wear their...
Each sex is treated differently for a naturally occurring body process. As discussed, body hair is viewed as masculine, leading to the assumption that women should be hairless and men should wear their body hair with pride. It is clear that society uses hair to label individuals as either male or female (Toerien and Wilkinson, 2003). In addition, male hair is associated with strength and power (Toerien and Wilkinson, 2003). So how come when women display body hair they are shamed, but men are encouraged to grow it? Hope (1982) elaborates that the term, “feminine, when applied to lack of body hair, implies a child-like status, as opposed to the adult status afforded men” (as cited in Toerien and Wilkinson, 2003). That being said, body hair is another way in which society ranks men as the superior gender by making women conform to the hairless normative. A study conducted by Tiggemann and Hodgson (2008), asked women why they practice hair removal. After completing a questionnaire with different statements to evaluate different factors such as normativity, sexual attractiveness, femininity and self-enhancement, they found significant support in all four types of factors for hair removal of the underarm, leg and pubic area. Additionally, they can found that one item pertaining to males preferring a hairless body, was the only one linked to two factors: normativity and sexual attractiveness. It is evident with their findings that women tend to follow the socially constructed normative for many reason, including to please men. The idea is that women have to change their bodies not only to be accepted by society, but they also do so to be accepted by men. Nonetheless, the must make is seem natural and effortless to uphold the beauty allure. In recent years, depletion of male body hair has become popular. In a study performed by Boroughs, et al. (2005), they found that men removed
