A Balance Between Being Lenient and Strict
Every parent uses different ways of parenting some parents like to be lenient because they value independence, and others like to be very strict because they value more culture and family but both want to teach something to their kids and succeed in different parenting experiences. In the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Amy Chua writes about her experience of raising her two daughters in a very strict “Chinese” way. In her book Chua claims that Chinese “strict” parents raise their kids better than Western “lenient” parents. Punishment is not bad when parents use to correct their children in a good way with limits. Chua punishes her daughters when they do not do the things or play their instruments perfectly as how she wants it. For instance, Chua punishes Lulu when she cannot play “The Little White Donkey” (60), by not letting Lulu use the bathroom, drink water, eat lunch and dinner until she could play the melody well ( pg 61-62). Even though the results of this punishment works well with Lulu because at some point Lulu starts to play the piece and every time Lulu played the piece it became more and more easy for her. easy for her. There are many ways to punish kids but no letting them use the bathroom or even drinking water is not one way, because at some point those kids can get traumatize. These punishments are traumatic because kids be afraid to ask permission to go to bathroom or drink water, even if they really want to go. As a result of that trauma kids are exposed to do pee themselves or hold on to the pee until their bladder explode just for been afraid to ask permission, and waiting so long and not go to the bathroom. These punishments are traumatizing compare to other punishments because kids can be afraid of not eat with the fact of not doing what their parents want they can. At some point Chua does not care if the punishments affects the people around her daughters or even family. The only thing Chua cares about is to have her daughters practice and play their instruments perfectly. For example, when Chua and her family goes on vacation Lulu and Sophia do not have to stop practicing their instruments no matter where they are. One day Chua and her family wanted to go and see the Palace of Knossos, but a day before Lulu and Chua had agreed to finish Lulu’s practice ten minutes earlier and play perfectly for ten minutes the next day.
