Strength is the key and best foundation when it comes to basketball injury prevention. If an athlete wants to take it a step further, improve his physical attribute, be able to jump higher, be able to run faster, become quicker or want to reduce and prevent injuries, strength is one of the vital and major parts of the equation.

In the world of basketball, strength is one of least sought attribute for players for some reason. Maybe it's the old belief that if a basketball player does body building methods to enhance his strength, he will become ineffective and slow. This may affect his way of playing, his mechanics of jumps will become flat out wrong and this is potentially dangerous.

What exactly is power? Power is how much force you put into the ground and how fast you can do it, how fast you can use it. Strength allows you to increase your force production and thus making other parts of your training become more effective. A smart and progressive program for strength building can result in an athlete effectively using his strength to improve his performance.

One of the most common things I hear from basketball players, parents and coaches all the time is "I want to do functional training." I do agree that all training should be "functional" but what is the true meaning of a "functional training?" For me a functional training is a "training that makes sense." We just not get stronger at a certain lift that we do but we want the strength we gain to be applicable in playing basketball.

The strength improvement and gains both the athletes and coaches are seeking for should be improvements in relative strength. For example, if you eat as much as you want and do heavy lifting during summers, surely you will get a lot stronger but this probably won't make you be too effective as a basketball player.
