You might think you know the objectives of a person until you see the deceitful tactics they use to get what they want. In the play written in 1623, the main character is an ambitious and powerful character who murders, and betrays anyone to get what he desires. Through the beliefs of prophecies and the manipulation of his fellow wife, he goes down a dark road of murder, betrayal and impurity in order to achieve and maintain kingship. In the other literature, the main character lives an average life in a dystopian society where his own thoughts are not even private. He goes through various secretive scenarios to achieve his goal which is to end the corrupt reign of the current political party. Macbeth believes the prophecies given by the three witches and because his prophecies came true, he thought the same would happen for banquo, which is why Macbeth made such a thoughtless decision. Although Macbeth wants to deceive all of Scotland that he is a great and rightful king, he counteracts that images by making such an impulsive decision. Because his prophecies came true, Macbeth believes that Banquo’s prophecies will come true as well which reveals that Macbeth is gullible. Moreover, in the beginning of the play after Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have decided to murder Duncan, Macbeth develops doubts about his actions and Lady Macbeth emasculates and manipulates him. After arguing in which action to take, Macbeth states “I am settled, and bend up/ Each corporal agent to this terrible feat./ Away, and mock the time with fairest show;/ False face must hide what the false heart doth know (1.7.89-93). Macbeth has been successfully manipulated by Lady Macbeth. He originally wanted to retract his plan and let Duncan live as he is a righteous king but his wife, being so power-hungry had the power to manipulate him to do what she desired. Through the pain and torture, Winston still has the courage and determination to believe what he knows is true regardless of how society sees him. This supports that Winston is different from Macbeth, because stays true to his belief and Macbeth believes what the witches tell him. This also reveals that Winston is very strong-willed. In both text, the main characters encounter deceitful situations and their actions accentuate their traits. Both characters are stuck in a hard situation but encounter deception. They are different in the way they handle the situations, Macbeth is impulsive, gullible and weak-willed and in contrast, Winston is precautious, genuine and strong-willed. The texts show that in stressful situations, Macbeth is willing to make impulsive decisions in order to save himself, as for Winston, he does what is required for the common good even if it is at his expense.
