The article, “Baked in the cake: Legal battles follow gay marriage ruling,” by Richard Wolf examines issues that are occurring nationwide between business owners and gay couples. The topic is pretty hot and recently has been gaining a ton of attention from people who are looking at businesses and how they interact with their community. With this issue in particular, the businesses aren’t interacting well which has caused them some major problems.
The article uses specific court cases and examples of times in which a business, such as the cake bakery, refuse to serve a customer a good or service because of their sexual orientation. Overall, Wolf does a good job identifying the key areas to look at with these businesses.

The reason that they are being considered as wrong is because they have a responsibility to their customers. Their responsibility is to make their customers happy and leave their personal life out of their business life. From the article it can be seen that all the businesses described are mixing their beliefs with the business. It is important not to do this because when a company does mix their beliefs into their company issues such as this one can arise. According to the business owners, the rights they hold as citizens should also be included with their business, yet when they do uphold such a belief it can violate other laws such as discrimination laws. As a business owner, one cannot discriminate based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or any others things of the like. But this is only the case in about half of the 50 states. This is important because all the companies described discriminate on sexual orientation in places where it can be seen as illegal. The businesses have not only a legal responsibility to its customers, but also a moral responsibility. The moral responsibility is that the company should maintain a universal sameness in who they serve a good or service meaning that they will serve everyone that wants what they provide. The business ethics of a company are extremely important to the community it represents and in this case the businesses described in the article misrepresented the community reflecting badly on both the community and the company.
