Illustrations of Fitzgerald’s Life in Babylon Revisited The short story “Babylon Revisited” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is about a man named Charlie who has an alcoholic problem and struggles to regain the custody of his daughter. Since Fitzgerald was one of many authors that found ways to express his life through his famous novels and short stories, in “Babylon Revisited” he presents certain challenges from his personal life. Fitzgerald illustrates his life through Charlie. Some of Fitzgerald’s challenges that influenced his writing in “Babylon Revisited” are by relating his wife and Charlie’s wife, alcoholic problem, financial problem, and sending his daughter away and the custody of Charlie’s daughter. He could not stay sober nor keep up with his work. After living a great life, due to the distraction of Great Neck and New York, Fitzgerald was unable to make progress with his third novel (Bruccoli). Fitzgerald became in debt and could not pay their way out with his short stories or novels (Reidhead 658). Fitzgerald’s career was going downhill. He started writing Hollywood screen writings and was sometimes rejected (Reidhead 659). Because of all the problems Fitzgerald was facing with his wife and financially, he became an alcoholic (659). In “Babylon Revisited”, Charlie is known as an alcoholic who lost everything due to the stock market crash. By saying that he lost everything, Fitzgerald gives us the idea that everything he had worked on can be lost at anytime. For example, Fitzgerald shows us that it is time to change when he wrote, “He thought rather angrily that this was just money-he had given so many people money.” (Reidhead 689). In a way, Fitzgerald displays an attitude …show more content…

Due to Fitzgerald’s financial instability, his daughter was taken to boarding school and was later than surrogated by the Ober’s family (Bruccoli). Fitzgerald was concerned with his daughter’s well being and wrote letters to her so he could support her (Bruccoli). In the short story, Fitzgerald and Charlie’s case was similar. Charlie returns to Paris to regain custody of his daughter. As he arrives to Paris, he goes to his sister house to visit his daughter (Fitzgerald 677). When he takes his daughter to dinner, Charlie states, “First we are going to that toy store in Rue Saint-Honore and buy you anything you like” (Fitzgerald 679). This shows how Charlie demonstrates his love to his daughter by only buying his her things in the same way that Fitzgerald did. During a heated moment, Charlie is told, “I’m afraid we’ll have to let it slide for a six months” (Fitzgerald 689). This illustrates the audience that Fitzgerald and Charlie are still irresponsible to take care of their child. However, they both show love for their daughter and that did care about them. We can see how within this short story; Fitzgerald used a lot of his personal
