Babylon is revered as one of the most grandiose, powerful civilizations of the ancient world. Ancient Babylon was located in the Fertile Crescent, an area between the Tigris and Euphrates river where many other ancient civilizations were founded such as Akkadian empire, Sumerians, and later, Persia. It was revered and awed by many of the ancient scholars. The name Babylon may come from the Akkadian word bav-ilim, which meant “Gate of God” or “Gate of the Gods.” Babylon is frequently discussed in the Old Testament of the Bible. This shows historical significance because it talks about how great and extravagant that this city really was. It was thought to have been a small city or a large port town. The most common history of Babylon is around 1792 B.C., near the end of the Akkadian empire at the start of King Hammurabi’s reign. He was given the throne by his father King Sin-Muballit. During his reign he quickly transformed Babylon into one of the greatest civilizations in the ancient world. Hammurabi was an Amorite, Semitic people who were ancestors of the Akkadians. These nomadic peoples finally settled in Mesopotamia and built on the fertile land. When Hammurabi's father Sin-Muballit gave him the throne, Babylonia only had four cities under its control. Through sheer strength and the discipline and size of his army, he was able to conquer all of Mesopotamia and a little outwards near the Mediterranean Sea. Due to this Babylon became the capital of this vast empire and center of the ancient world. Hammurabi wanted his empire to all obey him without contest.
