It's another Sunday and the auto racing community is getting ready for the green flag to drop. Thousands of people travel hundreds of miles to go to the track, while millions stay home to watch the event on television. The sport of auto racing is the fastest growing spectator sport today. Nascar, NHRA (drag racing), CART, and The Indy Racing League are some of the biggest auto racing events in the world. Every racing style has the element of excitement, sadness, greed, and violence. Are these the elements that make us fans or are there more?
Every race fan loves the excitement of racing. Two, sometime three cars racing side by side going close to two hundred miles per hour racing for the number one slot, who wouldn?t? The excitements of watching your favorite driver lead the race, hoping your driver can maintain the lead after twenty some cars come in to the pit for four tires and a tank of gas. Watch a pit crew change four tires and fuel up a car under twenty seconds. The excitement of auto racing is immeasurable. The entertainment of the sport is like no other.
Auto Racing does have a violent side to it. Not all races are accident free and drivers do not always walk away. Accidents in racing are just that, an accident. There is no way a car accident can be planned or timed to happen. The competition is fierce, and people make mistakes. The violent accidents are a part of the excitement of racing. Barrel racing is categorized under the sport of rodeo and is most likely to be associated with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and the National Barrel Horse Association. The sport of rodeo also includes bull riding, team roping, and tie down roping and can be mostly associated with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Even though the sport of rodeo in mainly dominated by men, barrel racing is the biggest outlet for women to show their skills in such a male dominated sport.
Dangers on roadways is an issue that describes the discrepancy between perception and reality of road rage. The media, for some odd reason, tends to make road rage a huge controversial issue. As seen on talk shows from Oprah Winfrey to CNN, they reveal to people that road rage could happen at any time and to always be looking over your shoulder. These talk shows and news programs also put fear into our minds by explaining that most roadragers often use guns to kill or injure their victims. Glassner contradicts the media's speculations by stating that out of approximately 250,000 people killed on roadways between 1990-1997, AAA attributed that one in one thousand was an act of road rage (pg.5).
Some say that automotive racing began when the second car was built. For over a hundred years, competition has driven innovation in the car industry, thus the industry maxim “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.” NASCAR and drag racing contributed greatly to muscle cars’ success. Muscle cars were born from these competitions as factory made race cars. Because of this, the muscle car quickly moved from a low quantity specialty item to the image of the American automotive scene. Each brand had to have one and each one needed better performance and personality than the next. The Golden Age began in the 1960s with the introduction of more performance models such as the Chevy SS Impala and the Ford Galaxy Starliner (Auto Editors).
Moonshining is the stuff of legends – from NASCAR greats to the Dukes of Hazzard, from Elliot Ness and Al Capone to bathtub gin and homebrew, stories of Grandpa’s backyard still are still told today. While the truth is often unknown, the stories of moonshine have some kernels of truth at their heart. Though we think of it often in connection with Depression Era Cheep Liqour” the truth is that modern moonshine is experiencing a renaissance – more and more people are interested and experimenting today, and retailers know it.
Days of Thunder, a 1990 box office classic, displays false information when it comes to the truth behind NASCAR. NASCAR is a professional based company and is headed by only the best. Its new penalty and regulation system and professionalism on and off the racetrack show the truth behind the character of NASCAR. The film Days of Thunder shows a false depiction of the company of NASCAR and prove to show that sometimes even Hollywood, can “get it wrong”.
Kant’s moral law revolves around the individual making decisions out of morality not self-interest, with no environmental factors taken into consideration. The golden rule “do unto others as you have done unto you” is a modern approach on Kant’s idea. It focuses on the individuals reasoning for doing the right thing but incorporates environmental factors. In society today, we do not focus solely on ones-self; making decisions for the good of others is impossible due to religion or family impacting daily decisions. As a nursing student we use a holistic approach in caring for our patients. This looks at the individual and their environmental factors in creating a plan of care while providing the best care. This topic opened my eyes to how society has changed today compared to when Kant was a philosopher. He states, “a good will is not good because of what it affects or accomplishes, it’s good in itself (14:30).” Today we focus so much on the consequences of every action, whether or not it will benefit us, and never make decisions just because it is

When two drivers try to outrace each other on public streets, automobile driving makes a turn into the illegal form of motor racing known as street racing. Several possible causes to this aggressive street driving include a recent release of movies that inspire racing by the desire to fulfill the adrenaline rush raging in young people, the overall convenience of street racing, and most importantly, a way for teenagers to achieve nobility status in a short a time.

(World Health Organisation, 2009) The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices. Social determinants have many factors and in this essay education will be the main social determinant of health discussed and how this could have an impact on the physical and mental sides of health.
The connection between drivers and aggressive driving is that it’s contagious. Driving is dangerous already and now we have someone on the same road driving with no respect and risking everyone on the road is even worse. Marcella Baietto, a reporting journalist for AzCentral, wrote about an accident on Intersection 17 in Phoenix, Arizona. She had been ejected from her car and was killed, leaving six others injured, five being children. ...ture a risk-taking species. In ancient times we took risks just to eat. Later we took huge risks by setting out in little wooden ships to explore the earth's surface. We continued as we sought to fly, travel faster than the speed of sound and to head off into space. We rely on increasingly more complex equipment and constantly strive to design and manufacture faster and even more elaborate devices. It goes without saying that every effort is made to ensure our "safety"; to keep us from harm or danger. Every time you slide behind the wheel of your vehicle you are taking a risk. Driving is the riskiest activity in our lives. It is an inherently "unsafe" environment. The most perfect vehicles on the best designed highways on beautiful sunny days driven by fallible human beings crash into each other. The only way to drive "safely" (as we are all admonished to do!) is to learn more about the process. Learn more about your vehicle and how to maintain it; learn how to use your eyes to look far down the road; learn to spot problems before they happen; and also learn to deal with emergency situations. In most cases it's the human element that fails. After all, safe is only as safe does.
Fast food has changed the face of the world. Major chains like McDonalds span all over the world. Fast food chains are continuing to grow despite numerous facts of their unhealthiness. Fast food has been proven to be a dangerous food source, yet people continue to purchase it. The more people buy fast food the more it allows the big corporations to grow. People continue to eat fast food because there are no other convenient options.
I abstained from squandering money on silly, unnecessary items. I picked up every extra shift obtainable to earn extra money. I went to the Dollar Tree and bought two plates, two spoons, two knives, two forks, two bowls, napkins, toilet paper, dish soap, and one basket to hold my laundry. My motto was “the minimum necessary just to get by.” My first big purchase was a used full size bed with sheets and comforter. I had never felt more excited. About three months later I had enough money to buy my first couch. A used, dirty-brown in color, three seated sofa. The couch fit perfectly in my tiny living room. When I finally turned eighteen I picked up even more shifts and had a decent amount of money saved up. I applied for a position in Quincy at Blue Cross Blue Shield, and then shortly after was offered the position. Moving to Quincy and working at Blue Cross was benevolent to my living
The author gives clear evidence to support his topic that illegal street racing is dangerous. Racing on a public road can have many variables that can lead to the worst. Some of these variables are that “where unexpected traffic, uneven roads and inexperienced drivers, some as young as 16, form a deadly combination.” The author tells how an innocent person walking across the street, was hit by one of three cars racing that were traveling approximately 200 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The body was thrown 80 meters and died before he hit the ground. “In Vancouver alone, police count six fatalities from street racing in the past year.” Mark uses this information to get his point through to the readers because people are most affected when they hear about other people dying.
Parent involvement affects all aspects of a child’s education. Parents must be involved as teachers, learners, supporters, and advocates of their child’s learning (Hopkings). Studies show that kids who know that their parents are involved and interested tend to take more responsibility for their own learning and behavior. Schoolwork and grades improve. Work habits improve. Less work is handed in late. Fewer referrals for behavior problems are made. Attendance increases, and fewer kids show up late for class (Hopkings). With all this information documented it shows the true importance of parent involvement in education. The more involved the parents are, the better off each child will be. So when you become a parent, get involved in your child’s education!
