Hi everyone. You probably already know what this speech is about because by now you’ve heard it at least 3 times from multiple groups. But we aren’t just telling you old news. We are informing you on your rights as consumers. (Click) A consumer is anybody who purchases goods and services to satisfy their own needs and wants. (Click) And chances are there’s got to be a point in your life in which you’ve bought something, whether it was food from the canteen or products online. So, in short, we are all consumers. And as a consumer, you have probably been told lies, and have had your rights violated.

They outline their purpose on their website… “Making markets work for consumers, now and in the future”. They aim to promote competition and fair trade in markets. The ACCC also enforces protective legislation, mainly the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.

(Click)Consumer redress refers to making an unjust situation right. (Click) Consumers have multiple ways to deal with problems they encounter in the marketplace. It is the consumer’s choice to return the item to either the seller or supplier. However, it is easier to directly resolve problems with the business. If you choose to directly approach the importer or manufacturer, you are only entitled to recover the cost from them. This includes compensation for damage or loss and the reduction in the product’s value. Some fair ways to address these issues are to get a repair, replacement, or refund, however, you aren’t always entitled to one.
