Alisha Locklear Parks BUA 260 B October 22, 2014 Assisted Living Industry Assisted living is a type of elderly care that offers a level of attention and independence between those offered by nursing homes and independent living. It is the most favored and fastest growing long-term care option for seniors in the United States (History). By the late 1970s it was very evident that the traditional setting of a nursing home was no longer suitable for the aging seniors and their family members. With developments in medicine seniors were able to age in place, so many were begging for the establishment of a nursing home. These communities house over one million seniors. Globally, the assisted living industry is the 69th largest economy in the world (ALFA). In the United States assisted living the number of occupants is approximately 780,000 (ALFA). Within the United States assisted living employs more than 420,000 people, pays salaries and wages over $10.6 billion annually, and has an annual gross revenue of more than $33 billion (ALFA). Some assisted living companies within the United States include: Brookdale, Trilogy Health Services, Aegis Living, Emeritus Senior Living, Sunrise Senior Living, Elmcroft Senior Living, and Benchmark Senior Living (Magazine). In the future, the demand for assisted living will remain as it is now if not greater. The future will hold more advances in technology, A Growing Role for Accountable and Managed Care, and An Increasing Interest in Affordability and Value, (Stevenson). You have to incorporate the cost of the land, the professional fees, the construction itself, and the installation of furniture and equipment. You also have to incorporate the cost of the employees you have to hire to operate the facility. Before you even construct the facility you have a process of submitting plans for approval. You must have zoning ordinances and an assortment of codes such as plumbing, fire, building, mechanical, and electrical. There are certain standards for the square footage a facility must have. A minimum of 35 square feet (3 m2) of living and dining space are required per resident. Those facilities also serving as adult day care centers must provide an additional 35 square feet (3 m2) of living and dining space per adult day care client (FACILITIES). Some facilities may range from 150,000 through 30,000. The number of residents residing in a facility ranges from how big or small the facility is, the more space you have the more people you can have. A small facility is a building consisting of one or more floors providing sleeping arrangements for 16 or fewer residents exclusive of "live-in" house parents, family or staff. A large facility is a building or buildings consisting of one or more floors providing sleeping accommodations for 17 or more residents exclusive of "live-in"
