I have spent quite some time examining the state policies for Residential Care Facilities and assisted living facilities. These policies cover everything that one might identify within an RCF. There are regulations that dictate the evacuation of a facility. Within Preferred Family Healthcare the RCF is on the second floor of the facility. The general rule of thumb there is that individuals need to be able to navigate the stairs, moving from the second floor to the first floor and out of the building within two minutes. The state policies also state that there is a minimum number of fire drills that the facility needs to conduct within a year. This details a living room/social area, a kitchen or family style eating area, laundry accessible to the residents, a bathroom within the resident's room and they are to have an outdoor activity area. I was very surprised to see that the state regulations had specific ideas about the temperatures within the residents rooms. These regulations state that the rooms be no colder than 68 degrees and that the rooms have the ability to be heated to at least 80 degrees. The regulations state that residents rooms be "neat, orderly and cleaned daily". I had no idea that it would be so clearly and simply stated in the regulations. I felt that this was something that was implemented by staff. Another thing that I found interesting in the regulations was the statement that residents need be "free from body odor and mouth odor". I found it very interesting that the policies stated things like the fact that residents need to be provided with comfortable chairs, curtains in their room and that the hot water that they have access to have the temperature
