Chapter 7 Short Paper
Chapter 7 goes into depth about the assimilation process. Assimilation refers to those ingoing behavioral and cognitive processes by which individuals join, become integrated into, and exit organization. The book describes it as a dual process. Half of the process is due to the organization trying to influence the adaptation of individuals through formal and informal socialization processes. The second part is individualization, where the employee tries to change some aspects of the organization to accommodate his or her needs, abilities and desires on the job. According to Morrissey et al (1991) written in Burnet (1998), assimilation is the achievement of invisibility by the immigrants’ through their attainment of normal Australian practices. According to Wagley and Harris written in Berndt (1964), assimilation means that a minority group loses its identity as a discreet group and merges with the dominant group. In this case, immigrants become more like local people by adopting the values, norms, foods, and culture from host countries.
According to Pascale, socialization is essential to the integration of new members into an organization (P 27). However, it is up to the organization to create an environment that offers both new and established members order and consistency through explicit procedures and implicit social controls (P 34). Furthermore, by providing organizational members with continuity and clarity, the firm is able to establish a strong cohesive culture that empowers its employees so that they may develop the social currency they need to implement change and execute tasks efficiently (P 35). It is this strong cohesive culture that has sustained some organizations over numerous generations (P 29); and it is this culture that Pascale’s seven step model of socialization is intended to cultivate (P 34).
It is the dream of every immigrant, to live a worry free life in a new country that can offer so much. A place where one can work for suitable wages, a place where one can raise their children free of the problems plaguing their previous country and a place where one can grow spiritually and socially. Assimilation can be drastic or very simple, from changing the type of food one eats to converting one's religious beliefs. The determining factors of whether to adapt or not are the morals and beliefs that the immigrant has been brought up on. If the immigrant was brought up on strong morals and beliefs towards their religion and nationality, chances are that the immigrant would rather be alienated and looked down upon rather than conforming to
Assimilation is a force that is unstoppable. Americans do it on a daily basis without the time to contemplate whether to assimilate or not. Assimilation also keeps our world turning; it is the basis of agreement and understanding. As we assimilate we understand that through conforming this will create a strong unit. When working with a company, conformation is needed. To move as a unit, and to be displayed as a unit is any company's desire. Why would any prestigious company want to be displayed as disorganized? Or have employees that cannot work or agree with one another? It is a characteristic that is needed in every person, the ability to work as a unit, and become a team player. Through assimilation, teamwork is established and is learned. Teamwork is the basis of any company, and through teamwork the company will thrive as one unit.
Subsequently, following the formal phase of training, the new employee is exposed to an informal phase of socialization. This would be equivalent to a Crime Scene Technician that has graduated from the more formal training, but is now exposed to field training. This informal phase is generally conducted by the employees peer (Stojkovic et al., 2008). The peer or manager that works with the new employee now exposes the employee to hands on elements of the profession. A key element in the informal phase that is unlike that of the formal phase, socialization is ongoing. The contacts that the employee has with his peers, managers, or clients will continue to shape his attitudes throughout his career.

... They believed assimilation occurred into different sections of American life, and could happen in one generation or through several generations. The first section of assimilation was the straight line method that occurred step by step. An immigrant enters America and overtime they become part of mainstream society by learning the language, learning the culture, and improving occupation. If they don’t, it is believed that their children will. Another section is through using your ethnic community for upward mobility. It allows for the maintenance of their culture while drawing on their resources to move them up into American society. The last section the authors believe an immigrant can assimilate is downward into inner city culture or underclass. This would be a class with high drop-out and crime rates, low employment, and poor schooling.
To begin, I want to define assimilation which according to the Oxford dictionary means “The absorption and integration of people, ideas, or culture into a wider society or culture” After see this definition I may say that we as humans, we are always trying to adapt to new cultural environments in the places where we are living. So, when a child or an adult move to a different place or to a different country, they consciously or unconsciously tend to adjust themselves to the new culture of the dominant population. Talking about assimilation I think that a person in his/her own choice, can opt how much they want to integrate to the new culture. The two processes that are involved in every interaction are assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation means gaining some knowledge and making it fit in with what you already know. This is a necessity in order to develop our cognitive structures. This is a process that everyone encounters even though they may not be aware of when it is happening. Our perceptions of things are enhanced when something of the outside world is assimilated or added into our internal world. Accommodation is the changing of one’s structure of thought. During this process, the gaining of new knowledge fails to co-exist with what we already know. Therefore, we must accommodate or adjust our previous way of thinking to maintain stability. These two processes interact to form a state of equilibrium.
Integrating in Socio-cultural Perspective means that the immigrant group: • Have the same norms and values as the rest of the population. • Have more or less the same opinions and culture as the rest of the population.
