Weather you choose a clinical track like nurse clinician or advanced practice nurse, or management track with responsibilities of maintaining a high level of operational efficiency as well as quality care. Other career opportunities include research, consulting, and teaching. Management level nursing requires an advanced degree in nursing. There are now many healthcare organizations that have policies that require a BSN or higher for advancement into supervisory non- clinical positions. By earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing you’ll be prepared for and qualified for jobs in leadership positions, a BSN opens up specialized areas of nursing. The clinical track allows you to continue bedside nursing or you can choose to become a nurse clinician or advanced practice nurse. With your BSN if you continue bedside nursing you would be given more responsibility like overseeing LPNs, support staff and being responsible for day to day operations. Other opportunities that will open up for you is to become either a nurse clinician or an advanced practice nurse, both require further schooling but you are now eligible to purse these because you have your BSN. Nurse clinicians are involved in patient care but also help develop nursing care standards through evidence based practice and quality improvement initiatives. Advanced practice nurses are more autonomous, having an increased scope of practice that extends beyond nursing and approaches traditional medical practice. These nurse professionals are allowed to take health histories, prescribe and manage medications, interpret test and laboratory results. They can diagnose and treat many chronic and acute healthcare issues. The management track will have you less involved with direct patient care and more involved with maintaining quality care and operational efficiency.
