The article “Vaping is better than smoking” by Marcus Munafo, a professor of psychology at University of Bristol. As the title of the article indicates, the author is claims that vaping is healthier than cigarettes. In fact, he states the tobacco smokers may be able to prevent artery cell damage by vaping. While many people claim there are several potential health risks that vaping can cause, the biggest proven harm e-cigarettes can cause is dependence, as most e-liquids contain nicotine. According to a report sponsored by UK’s Department of Health and published by Public Health England – a prestigious group of highly qualified scientists, researchers and public health professionals – electronic cigarettes are at least 95 percent safer than tobacco cigarettes. The report also recognizes their potential as a viable approach to quitting smoking. Vaping is still dangerous, and many vaporizers employ a liquid known as e-liquid or e-juice that contains nicotine, but usually not in the high concentrations that represent in cigarettes. The biggest change in safety comes from the way the product is produced and delivered. In smoking, the contents (usually tobacco and about 4,000 other ingredients) are combusted. They are lit and they burn and the smoke is inhaled by the user. This also creates secondhand smoke which causes numerous health problems on its own. There is a new trend hitting the market known as e-cigarettes, or “vaping.” Many people believe that e-cigarettes are better than traditional cigarettes, but research shows just how unhealthy and harmful e-cigarettes are for everyone. The FDA has not yet decided if e-cigarettes should be regulated like tobacco products. E-cigarettes are marketed to help people quit smoking and live a healthier nonsmoking life. E-cigarettes are meant to help break the habit of smoking, but why are there so many “toxic chemicals” (Gilger) in the vapor? Is this new invention to help people quit smoking or just another way for tobacco companies to get richer?

Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society. During 1995, approximately 2.1 million people in developed countries died as a result of smoking. One tobacco use is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the United States. Lung Cancer mortality are about 23 times higher for current male smokers and 13 times higher for current female smokers compared to a lifelong never-smoker.
The nicotine in the “nicotine, whatever its source, can harm lung tissue” and nicotine is an ingredient in most vapes. There are certain styles of vape juice that do not have nicotine, however, even those have proven harmful. Professor Charalambos Vlacholoulous of the University of Athens Medical School conducted a study with a group from the University to test the difference vaping has on the aorta compared to smoking. Both smoking and vaping stiffens the heart and this is bad because “if the aorta is stiff, you multiply your risk of dying either from heart disease or from other causes.”
They might not contain as many harmful chemicals in actual cigarettes, but there are still some nasty kinds of health and danger risks that lure in vapes. It might be still early in the game for vapes, but as time goes on, people find out more and more that vapes are really dangerous for humans. Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
From my late teens, into my mid-twenties, I was a smoker. At first, it was just recreational; however that changed fairly quickly. I began buying them and smoking regularly throughout the day. It then progressed to smoking a pack per day until it was too late. I was officially addicted. I knew it was a terrible habit and I was shamed of it and would hide it from friends and family hoping they wouldn’t find out. Finally, after coughing hacking, and repeatedly getting sick several times a year, I came to the realization that I had to quit. However, it wasn’t as easy as I had anticipated. After relapsing several times before I was finally able to quit, I broke this terrible habit successfully. It was an extremely difficult habit to break and I’ll never go back. I was a lucky individual who had the mental toughness and willpower to overcome this strong addiction, but Americans struggle to quit each year, and many never do. However, there’s a new product on the market today called electronic cigarettes that are believed to aid individuals in the fight against addiction. It’s a battery powered device that heats a nicotine diluted solution into a vapor that is then inhaled. It’s believed to be a healthier, more affordable alternative to tobacco cigarettes. It is much safer because it doesn’t have nearly as many harmful chemicals as tobacco cigarettes and it’s believed to be much more affordable for consumers. However, many critics believe that electronic cigarettes are extremely addictive and just as harmful. The author’s purpose in this essay is to show how smoking can be beneficial in some ways. Brimelow presents his credibility with studies from the International Journal of Epidemiology, New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of the American Medical Association (Brimelow 142). He notes that smoking can both calm and stimulate people. Smoking has been shown to calm people while driving if they take long puffs. Smoking has also been shown to stimulate if taken in quick, short puffs. Brimelow reiterates this by telling us that “Current understanding is that nicotine is ‘amphoteric’ –that is, it can act to counter both conditions, depending on how it is consumed” (142). This is a reason how smoking can be beneficial.
Tobacco has been around for centuries today we have many different ways to inhale tobacco. Cigarettes and vaping are the two most popular ways people are inhaling tobacco in today 's day and age. Even though cigarettes have been around for many decades, vaping has become a new sensation. One ex-smoker has created a website that shares his story as well as his findings on the use of vapes and e-cigarettes in his own personal life. The side effects he found were “Dry skin, Dry mouth, Rash/burning sensation on face, Itchiness, Puffy/dry eyes, Caffeine sensitivity, Minor blood nose issues”. Vaping has been found to reduce withdraw symptoms, help achieve tobacco abstinence, and reduce the risk of smoke related oral disease. Vaping has the potential to be a more successful tool in cessation than a nicotine patch since "Former smokers who used vaping as a tobacco cessation aid reported fewer withdraw symptoms than smokers who used nicotine patches to help them quit (How Safe)". In a 2014 Cochrane Collaboration Systematic review it was shown that e-cigarettes containing nicotine increased a smoker’s chance of successfully quitting long term compared to e-cigarettes without nicotine. Allowing them to wean off the nicotine rather than quit "cold-turkey". In a similar way other smokers have been able to reduce the amount that they smoked by half using a nicotine containing e-cigarette compared to a 0% e-cigarette or a patch (GBU). Juices contain anywhere from .3-35% nicotine, and most companies are slowly converting to only making .3-.6% juices. When recommending nicotine containing juices, it is better to start at a medium or low range for example .4% it’s not the lowest or the zero containing, but it’s a low does to help with cessation. Dieting has also been a reason consumers have turned to vaping, with a large variety of flavors from sweet to savory, and even earthy juices. Everyone knows that cigarettes are horrible for your health and increase your risks of cancer. Not too long ago there was a big advertisement for e-cigarettes also known as vaping. It was advertised to be a healthier alternative and comparable to a nicotine patch to help you quit smoking. Many people began to question this new form of smoking and if it was really a safer alternative. Even though vaping is a safer alternative than smoking, vaping is not harmless because you are still getting nicotine, inhaling poison and risking a weaker immune system.
