Recommended: Art History Chapter 1
We all have something to say. Academically and artistically speaking, the narratives that simmer inside of me are largely fueled by my passion for the study of the past and how it informs the present and future. For me, the vehicles for expressing these narratives are the pencil and paper, paint brush and canvas. The way I see it, with the Brown-RISD program, Brown will stoke the fire beneath my narrative cauldron to new heights and RISD will hone the skill-set needed to positively and effectively harness the creative energy that boils out. Specifically, I hope to dual major in Illustration at RISD and Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at Brown. Thereafter, I hope to pursue a career that surrounds me with art and continues to inspire my …show more content…
I enjoy researching and studying artists, periods, styles, specific works and locations. More particularly, I am interested in Ancient Greek and Roman, Renaissance and Baroque paintings, drawings and prints, because these relate to historical periods that fascinate me. You can often find me sketching in one of The MET’s many galleries. Art is not just a passion of mine, but an extension of who I am. I find that I bring art to most everything I do. At school, in addition to being the founding member of the now defunct Classics Club, I am a leading member of the Art Club, an art contributor to the school magazine, and I serve as art/design coordinator for my high school's award-winning FIRST Robotics team. I even bring my art to my varsity swimming team, where I designed team logos and team banners. Having studied Studio Art for the past five years through my high school’s comprehensive art sequence, in addition to AP European History and AP Art History, and further improving on my skill set from high school classes, I attended the intensive studio summer art program at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design for 2 summers and an Intensive Drawing Class at Brown University this past summer. I concentrated in Drawing & Painting, focusing on an exploration of the techniques, materials and processes used in creating two-dimensional art, and reinforcing my …show more content…
Art, Magic and Science in Renaissance Europe, Fantasy Painting: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, and What’s Your Story are three courses that could easily be listed as electives for the REMS program, but taught at RISD. My life has always centered itself around stories, whether it be studying them through an academic or artistic sense. In fact, my AP Art concentration revolves around creating various stories within the works that incorporate both the works of the past and the influence of the present. I've always been awe struck by the ideas and happenings of different time periods and how such things impacted culture and what the time produced artistically, so a class like this seems to have been crafted (perhaps by magic?) My first exposure to fantastical art other than my mother’s obsession with Dali, was in AP art history class when we began to focus on surrealism and how to analyze the meanings of works of art beyond the understanding of certain symbols and archetypes. This desire to explore surrealism only furthered itself upon completing a surrealism assignment during Brown’s pre-college program under the guidance of Professor Lara Henderson. She, along with my own art teachers, have even stated that some of my most striking work really feels about world building,

Surrealism as a “way of life”, the ideas, styles, and attitudes that it had expressed has continued and will continue to live on for many years to come.
Surrealism, who has not heard this word nowadays? World of the dreams and everything that is irrational, impossible or grotesque, a cultural movement founded immediately after the First World War and still embraced nowadays by many artists. In order to understand it better it is necessary to look deeper into the work of two outstanding artists strongly connected with this movement, and for whom this style was an integral part of their lives.
I am currently studying Art at A-level and have had my work exhibited in a gallery and in local industry buildings as part of the 'Art in the Workplace' scheme which is organized by my college. The piece of my artwork which was displayed, and used in a business's workplace was a painting inspired by an Art Department trip to Italy. In my spare time, I enjoy running my own comedy website with my friends, which has enabled me to learn good organizational skills. Aside from art, I enjoy playing basketball with other students from my college every Wednesday afternoon. I have found this to be a welcome break from normal study, allowing me to exercise at the same time as relieving stress.
When you love to do something, you want to do it every day, all the time, till you get sick of it. Even then that excitement and devotion to do it is still there. That is how I feel about art. I have a great passion for it. It is a form where I can express myself in a way words can’t.
Throughout high school, I have won sixty five art awards nearly half of these are first places, and awards of excellence and six best of shows. The artwork I’m most proud of is a large drawing of a girl surrounded by Koi fish which won three of my six best of shows. It was also the inspiration of my AP series focusing on people with animals and I credit it as the main artwork that earned me a five on the AP test. I have also been my schools Governor’s Honors visual arts nominee for two years. While I have not been selected to attend, participating in the process has pushed me to be more creative, outgoing, and experimentive in my art. In my tenth grade year I was invited to join the charter group of the Thomasville teen artists collective.
Surrealism and the surrealist movement is a ‘cultural’ movement that began around 1920’s, and is best known for its visual art works and writings. According to André Berton, the aim was “to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality” (Breton 1969:14). Surrealists incorporated “elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and ‘non sequitur”. Hence, creating unnerving, illogical paintings with photographic precision, which created strange creatures or settings from everyday real objects and developed advanced painting techniques, which allowed the unconscious to be expressed by the self (Martin 1987:26; Pass 2011:30).
Untitled is so precisely crafted, that it instills a sense of unease in its viewers—not unlike how a modern AI robot thrusts all who observe it deep within the uncanny valley. Logically, we know such a setting has no place within our reality, but the skill with which it was fashioned is oftentimes so extraordinary, that it can almost deceive our eyes into believing otherwise. Unlike traditional landscapes, however, these exquisitely rendered scenes are painted from neither a reference photograph nor en plain air, but straight from the artist’s mind’s eye—we, as viewers, find these paintings so convincing because they actually do exist within the unconscious minds of their artists. The confusion, chaos, turmoil, loneliness, sorrow, and other emotions often depicted in the work of Surrealist artists is a reflection of their own inner confusion, chaos, turmoil, loneliness, and depression. More often than not, after waking from a particularly unsettling or peculiar dream, we feel the compulsion to analyze or decipher it—in fact, there are countless pieces of literature dedicated to the very cause.
For me the greatest thing about combining Graphic Design and Marketing, is the chance it gives me to express my original ideas digitally. It is the perfect opportunity for me to enrich artistic and technologically. These two subjects allow me to experiment, by giving full rein to my imagination. It gives me the option to enhance my marketing knowledge, giving me a better understanding of the importance of interpersonal and visual communication skills, commercial awareness, the design process and teamwork. Combined with enthusiasm and hard work these subjects lead to truly outstanding career opportunities, most notably for me: creative director, director of brand and innovation and designer.
I have placed great importance on my studies, maintaining a high average while researching art fundamentals and techniques at home. Although my high-school courses have only taught the very basics elements of art, the weekly six hours of English have proved to be a welcome addition to my usual online conversations and have helped me become a highly confident speaker. However, since I have had to keep my schoolwork separate from my artistic pursuits, I am very eager to finally study art in a dedicated academic environment. Throughout my years at college I hope to delve deeper into creating game assets, familiarizing myself further with 3D modeling as well as polishing my 2D illustrations until I am capable of painting unique industry-standard
“We need people who think with the creative side of their brains—people who have played in a band, who have painted…it enhances symbiotic thinking capabilities, not always thinking in the same paradigm, learning how to kick-start a new idea, or how to get a job done better, less expensively” -Annette Byrd (“Useful Quotes for Arts”). All categories of the arts such as music, drawing, painting, photography, architecture, and an endless amount more create not only the beauty of the craft, but even more. The different areas of all career paths include the artistic thinking to create original ideas and thoughts to make something extraordinary. However, high schools primarily in the United States lack sufficient funding for arts programs as a whole
I have known art, since my fine motor skills developed. I do not claim to be an Artist—that is for the audience to determine. I prefer to paint, sculpt, and print when expressing myself, after all, those are the forms I am closest to mastering. My art practices begun when my drawing abilities surpassed my speech delivery, as a result of moving into a foreign environment. My dose of art practice is not limited to what is recommended to others.
Why are you interested in participating in an internship at The Museum of Modern Art? From an early stage of my life, I discovered my intuitive passion for arts. I remember myself transforming juvenile emotions, into art, while sketching, drawing, and even making my own handmade clothing. I had always been curious to experiment with colors, materials, textures, textiles always into.

I have become more right-brained because of my childhood. As a result to that, I am a surprisingly visual person. I have many ideas and I do not just want to stick to one field in art. I enjoy drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design, motion graphics, animation, sculpting, videography and music production. For this reason, I am in the process of achieving a Bachelors Degree in Art.
