In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, is the rhyme embedded in children’s heads in the first lesson of US history. However, beyond the discovery of the New World Christopher Columbus receives no other mentions. Even how he was the reason why Native Americans were kept as slaves and mistreated. Although Christopher Columbus’ actions are not all honorable he should still be celebrated during Columbus Day as a brave explorer who risked his life. His efforts bridged a gap between the New and Old World which impacts our society today greatly. Christopher Columbus Day is a holiday many Americans honor, as it celebrates his discovery of the New World on October 12, 1492. This discovery opened the Age of Exploration for Europe and formed the basis for our world today. Peter Gibbon, the author of “Apologize for Columbus”, explains, “His voyage opened a century of exploration and led to the creation of the American colonies”(Gibbon 1). The future would have been so different if not the creation of the American Colonies, and this major effect can not be overlooked. “From the New World came corn and potatoes that fended off hunger for millions of people in Africa and Europe”(Gibbon 1). The new crops improved the Old World. Corn and potatoes yield large quantities of produce and grow well in European climate. The crops helped conquer hunger, provide nutrients, and survive the winter which all helped the population grow. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, is the rhyme embedded in children’s heads in the first lesson of US history. However after that all we learn is how he, a hero, discovered the New World. There is no mention of torturing Native Americans and enslaving them. Columbus on one side is a man who discovered the New World however on the other he is a villain who tortured Native Americans and caused their destruction. His treacherous actions cannot take away from the fact that he was the reason why we live in the New World
