Recommended: Should women in the military be allowed into war

Throughout the recent years there has been a gargantuan debate about if women should be drafted or not. Some believe that women should not be put into the draft when they turn 18. Others believe that if we were to treat everyone equally than women should also be put in the draft. In this essay I will present my thoughts about this pressing debate. Then, I will bring in some other peoples opinions to see some mores sides of this debate. My personal opinion is man nor woman should be drafted. I think that it is ridiculous that our country still has a draft, but if we were to still have a draft I think that it should be equal and based on physical strength. Meaning, the stronger or the fittest people would go first if that is a man or woman. …show more content…

My first friend Regan she says, “I feel like in this society it is only fair that women be subject to the draft. With equal rights comes equal responsibility and it is only fair to hold women to the same standard men are held to. With this my only hesitation is toward families; with the option of taking mother or father will the family have to choose who stays and who goes? Will this choice leave guilty minds if one who goes falls to war?”. I have similar beliefs with Regan and I understand her concern with the distribution of the families. There are not many other comments to be made since I have already commented on most of these topics in my previous paragraphs. The next person I proposed this question to is Alli. She has the same opinion as I do but she said exactly, “I feel no one should be subject to the draft. Serving your country should be your choice and if you are taken to do something such as fight against your will, will you really want to fight, will you really do your best?”. I personally did not even think about how this would affect the will to fight as well as they can. The question is then raised that if they want to live then they would need to fight their very best. The Selective Service System is an independent agency of the United States, which gives the President the right or power to conscript men for military service. There have been different Acts passed by congress since 1917 that require men of various ages to register for service. Although, the name of each Act and the age requirements of the registries changed, the Acts were all similar in nature. They all gave the President the right to call men to war when he deemed necessary. In January 1973, Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announced the creation of the all-volunteer service, retracting the need for the draft (GAO.gov). Under current law, all men between the ages of 18-25 must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday, however this information is used mostly for recruitment purposes and in case of any future crisis. There has been much controversy over this matter since the Vietnam War, when people started to realize the draft was unfair due to loopholes and draft exemptions making the draft unfair for working men.
