The formation and birth of two babies do not seem to be a rare occasion these days. Throughout the years, the number of twin births, both fraternal and identical, has grown by about seventy-nine percent; IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) has also been one of the causes. Twins are two offspring which are created by the same pregnancy and birth; there can be two types of twins, either fraternal or identical. To briefly summarize, fraternal twins are the formation of two different eggs, which were fertilized by more than one sperm cells, whereas identical twins are a result of a single fertilized egg which divides into two identical eggs. There are many interesting facts about twins such as fraternal twin girl has two times the chance of conceiving twins. Furthermore, although a set of identical twins have the same DNA, they don’t share the same fingerprints. One can tell if they are to have identical or fraternal twins early on in the pregnancy with the help of an ultrasound specialist can determine if there are one or two placentas, also the number of amniotic sacs there are. Identical twins share the same placenta and amniotic sac, but each has their own umbilical cord. There is such a condition called, “Vanishing twin syndrome,” where one of the two twins disappears during the pregnancy, this can occur if the mother experiences a miscarriage of one of the twins, or if the twin is reabsorbed into the placenta, the other twin, or the mother. The connection that twins have is like no other, from the womb throughout their whole lives. Although we are starting to see more twin pregnancies now, than in past years, the formation of both identical and fraternal twins is a wonderful process from the very beginning of the pregnancy, whether it started off with one or two eggs. Women can have many factors and predispositions that can lead them to the conception of multiple babies. Science and technology have helped us learn much more about twins, for instance, how they are formed, what takes place once inside the womb, and many conditions that can occur throughout the development of the twins. Today, we know so much about twins and still consider their creation, and birth to be what we know as the fascinating miracle that is

Twenty years ago, twin births were radically lower, with twins being more frequent than other multiple births. With technology becoming more advanced and people who normally have problems becoming pregnant can use in vitro fertilization, people delaying motherhood, and survival rate increasing; having twin children is not as rare as it was thought to be in the past. The characters in the novel are all twice-born because they wanted who they were in Deptford to disappear. Only of the characters were able to change who they were completely while the others just developed more into themselves as they grew. The idea of the twice-born is the idea of being able to change who you are and to completely move on from everything that has been holding you back.
Now, before they were foster children of Stef and Lena, they were in the foster care system because their birth mother was a drug addict, and their birth father was a convicted sex offender. The twins show an example of what some real issues children may face in the foster care system before they are lucky enough to get adopted. Fraternal twins are the most common type of twins. They are the result of the union of two eggs and two sperm. Fraternal twins can be the same or different sexes (Wade 53). Segal says that, “They are two individuals, no more genetically alike than brothers and sisters that develop from separate fertilizations” (Segal 1). Twenty-two pairs of autosomes is how many it takes to form a whole homo sapien. In addition, one pair of sex chromosomes is needed. These will either be in the form of two X chromosomes to form a female or an X and a Y chromosome to form a male. This pair of sex chromosomes is responsible for much more than just the external sex organs. They control hormones, the full internal reproductive structures, and the sex discernment within the brain.

February 13th, 1979, Janae and I were born in Sunrise Hospital, four minutes apart, to two anxious, ecstatic, and not to mention exhausted parents. Immediately following the birth, the doctor glanced up at my mother and father and announced that they were the proud parents of identical twin girls. My sister Janae was born first weighing a mere four pounds 11 ounces and I swiftly followed, weighing a hefty seven pounds zero ounces (very large for the average twin). The doctor proceeded to tell my mother that identical twins automatically have a special bond that exists between them, and that she was to enjoy the many fun, challenging, yet exciting experiences to come. One of the most challenging experiences to come would be the dreadful day when the two of us would realize that we couldn't be together always. That memorable day we slept together, side by side, in our rectangular clear plastic hospital beds -- determined to be inseparable for the remainder of our lives.
An important scientific argument for IVF is that, by studying fertilization and early embryonic development outside the womb, scientists might learn more about how to prevent certain birth defects (1). This proves that IVF could actually make improvements in medical advances, especially in regards to prenatal care. This is just one example of how IVF can actually be beneficial to the community. The only times that babies are malformed or sick are when the mother puts more than one baby in her uterus. Multiple fetuses increase the chance of birth defects because they have a greater chance of preterm birth, which is associated with long-term health. The long-term illnesses are cerebral palsy, mental illness, and blindness (Reddy 1). With this in mind, having single births is very safe and those babies are still healthy today, just like Sarah and Maggie Marshall’s baby. Single births are also very highly recommended by medical personnel. Going back to the first test tube baby the Browns were expecting, and Steptoe (the doctor) thought that this baby would be a failure. Conjoined twins, more commonly known as Siamese twins because of Chang and Eng Bunker, are considered extremely rare among populations. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, births of conjoined twins occur only once out of every 200, 000 births. Twins become conjoined when an embryo starts to divide but fails to complete the process. While the twins become a single entity, they are considered separate individuals. However, most conjoined twins do not survive after birth and when they do they tend to have problems with malformed organs that are shared. The research by the University of Maryland Medical Center concludes that the overall survival rate of these conjoined twins is somewhere between 5 and 25 percent. With that being said, conjoined twins are often viewed as curiosities and a rare occurrence in our society in general.
