Today we live in a world where many human beings move from one place to another. We live in a world where individuals in most cases move away or even escape their own country in order to live a better life than they had before. Though in the United States of America those who move in this country are called in such an unusual way. Those who move into this country, where I and million of U.S citizens live, are called the word “alien”, which according to the Oxford English Dictionary is someone who is “born in, or owing allegiance to, a foreign country.” When using the word “alien”, it mainly directs to immigrants from foreign countries in the world. This word nowadays brings negative connotations which cause those who are immigrants in the U.S to be viewed as awful, dreadful, atrocious beings. The reason why this word is viewed as negative in our society is due to the fact that according to the Cambridge Dictionaries Online the word “alien” means “relating to creatures from another planet.” Some of the many synonyms that are similar to this word’s definition is exotic, strange, repugnant, and even extraterrestrial. At first for almost 200 years American politicians have used this word to denote foreign nationals, but over the years, this word gained its Science-Fiction definition as something or someone out of this world. So now in the present the word alien has taken implications of being a criminal, or imaginably less human. In short, this is the reason why many immigrants in the U.S do not like to be characterized negatively since it gives them a bad image and it does affect them when applying to a job. The U.S should use a word that shows more positiveness such like a newcomer, adoptive citizen, or even an incomer. Even though the federal law states that “alien” means someone who lies in the borders of a country, but not originally from that country many immigrants interpret this word as not being human at all. Even Jose Antonio Vargas stated that using the word “alien” toward immigrants “has become such standard practice for politicians and the media...that people of all political persuasions do not think twice about doing it too.” Terminating this misused word would increase the happiness and more job opportunities for immigrants, which would be a good thing. And wouldn’t this be beneficial for the U.S economy? Shouldn’t we as a society, abolish this word since it’s crystal clear that the word “alien” is disrespectful and abusive? Would you feel offended if you were ever called alien in another country?
