In the United States, approximately 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year (Broecker). People make many assumptions about parenting teens, but parenting skills are less about age than about making the right choices and setting a good example; more people help the teen parent raise the child; and teen parents have a better chance of being closer to their child. Society is too hung up on one correct order of finishing high school or college, getting a job, getting married and having babies. That path isn’t the only way to have a healthy family and child. Society assumes that parenting teens cannot care for their children, but it is because of this attitude that teen parents do not get the support that they need and deserve. The negative outcomes that many people associate with teen parenting are a direct result of negative assumptions about and an unwillingness to support parenting teens, and it’s not until we truly understand what it means to be a teen parent that we will be able to give them the support they need.
