Showtime’s hit series “Homeland” recently aired an episode picturing a fictional Syrian refugee camp with Arabic graffiti. A Hezbollah (political party) militant escorted CIA agent Carrie Mathison past a graffiti-covered wall. Viewers who read Arabic found strange, harsh meanings behind the graffiti. One calle Homeland racist, and another read “ ‘Homeland’ is not a show.” Egyptian artist Heba Y. Amin took credit for the graffiti along with artists Caram Kapp and Stone. She said it was a soft protest against the misleading stereotypes on Muslims often shown in the series. Amin says producers wanted to make the camp authentic with art.
