Modern high school systems are troubled and challenged with the prevalence of distraction and technology-induced disobedience. The common problem among the majority of high school students is their overwhelming familiarity with rapid paced technological innovation. This retrofitted environment promotes impatience, disobedience and unfocussed students. I have personally witnessed a severe adaptation in the manner students are perceiving and interacting with teachers and instructors. The students have become predominantly dependent on rapid updates, instant messaging, and unfortunately their cell phones during school hours and activities. If the state could offer a high school fishing program to every district in Massachusetts, we could potentially increase the programs likeability, and outreach to students. Once the program has gained enough traction to “get in the water”, I certainly believe that high school fishing could promote the patience, and focus needed to combat the modern anxious, distracted school environment. For years fishing has been used to teach the values of patience, determination, and focus. High School fishing can be done as an extra-curricular activity, boats are not required to participate in fishing, however, a rod and reel is recommended and a fishing license is mandatory. The students that chose to participate in high school fishing can take various travel trips to neighboring waterways, and lakes to compete with one another in an old-fashioned fishing tournament. These travel trips to the location are similar to the manner in which other clubs travel to neighboring competition throughout the year. The program would be operated by both a director, and an assistant director to ensure ample supervision and guidance. The tournaments would be hosted within 15 miles of the high school to reduce travel expenses, and promote familiarity with the area.
