In the modern, busy 21st century, individuals are looking towards effortless ways to save money and time. In this case, nutrition and food preparation have been affected. As more and more packaged products and perishables are being mass produces, individuals are utilizing easy alternatives for a family’s nutrition. As preservatives are added into these products, the negative impacts towards consumers are rising. The positive correlations between the negative impacts and rise to the usage of these products have results to the global obesity epidemic. Hormonal imbalance is a nutritional issue not a medical issue. An increase amount of estrogen in our body can cause health issues with hormones. These hormones control our metabolism; they determine when we are hungry, what we are craving for and how we use the food as energy, and how much of it we use. Hormonal imbalances can cause underactive thyroid, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and Cushing’s syndrome. These are all leading factors of why individuals become overweight and obese. Underactive thyroid causes an individuals thyroid gland to not make enough thyroid hormone, which slows down their metabolism, increasing their weight. Cushing’s syndrome is when too much of hormone cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands. If an individual takes a certain medicine for long period of time in high doses, then they could also develop Cushing’s syndrome. Cushing’s syndrome causes people to have upper-body fatness, gain mass, and develop a round face, but thin arms and legs. Polycystic ovarian syndrome affects women at the age when they give birth. They inherit health issues, reproductive problems and are obese. These women also gain excessive hair growth. High levels of hormones cause these health issues. Hormones play a significant part in how significantly people eat and how much weight they will develop. Women often get hormonal imbalance if their periods occur often. Hormone is an important factor in obesity because they play a huge role in our body’s and how we survive.
