I believe climate change is now more than ever the biggest challenge that humanity faces. For that reason, people and communities need to cooperate together in order combat climate change. Following Trump’s presidency, debates were being made by the administration whether to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Change agreement, executive orders were signed dismantling Obama’s climate policies like the Clean Power Plan, and EPA was commanded to remove climate change information from its website. It was disheartening to experience, and many people including my family relocated to higher elevated locations in case the rising levels would be of impact. However, I knew that moving to higher grounds would not change the fact that the environment was changing and that Guam was slowly disappearing. President Barack Obama said, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” It was with this understanding and the image of Guam’s changing climate, which influenced my decision to move to the U.S. and obtain higher education in August 2014. Beyond preparing me for the challenges of adult life, the education from the University of Washington Tacoma will provide me with the knowledge to be able to create campaigns that raise awareness of climate change, advocate for companies to become more sustainable, and someday create a non-profit museum established to showcase artwork and objects based on the effects of climate change in different parts of the …show more content…
It was through my freshman leadership seminar class where I realized that my colleagues and I would be the next generation of workers. Humans and animals share this beautiful planet that we call home. But this beautiful home of ours is being regularly and increasingly torn apart by our own ignorant actions. These actions of ours have begun to unravel the very world in which we live, causing a self-inflicted crisis known as Global Climate Change. Global Climate Change is a severe dilemma, and it is continuously becoming more evident to the world’s population that climate change is being caused by changes in the reflectivity of earth’s atmosphere and surface, the ever changing variations of energy from the sun reaching the earth, and the daunting increase in greenhouse gasses.
Global warming has become on of the most controversial issues in the media today. While most of the Western world countries have generally accepted the premise that man's chemical emissions in the atmosphere can and are affected by the world’s climate patterns, in the United States, the issue has become so politicized with many republicans challenging the science behind the theory. Global warming is a greenhouse effect whereby gases are trapped on the earth’s surface causing it to heat up (Maslin 14). It is based on the worldwide temperature records that have been maintained by human beings through their activities since the 1880,s. In addition, global warming is not only caused by human activities only but also through climate changes in solar radiance. The problem is that, humans continue to contribute to the global warming phenomenon. All citizens should work in reducing human activities that cause global warming and also support the development of nuclear power. Scientists deem that, global warming is mainly caused by human activities which accelerate the natural process by creating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Human activities have become a great contribution to the greenhouse effect and this means that climate changes are inevitable. They further argue that, if these activities continue and are not reduced, it will lead to more trapping of energy radiated from the earth and this will likely lead to extreme weather and global warming. Global warming should be at reduced levels or else, it will be catastrophic.
Global climate change is a phenomenon widely accepted by the public in today’s society. A survey from Yale revealed that 63% of Americans believe that global warming is currently happening (Leiserowitz, 2013). And although the public has shown to misunderstand the scientific field, in the case of climate change, science supports their beliefs. Now, a majority of scientists accept that extreme changes are occurring in the world. So let us define climate change. People think that climate change is the same thing as global warming. However, global warming only represents one aspect of climate that is temperature. Climate change is any significant change in temperature, precipitation, or a wind pattern that occur over several decades or longer.
The Earth is currently locked in perpetuating spiral of climate change. Even if the reason of climate change may be the natural cycles, we humans are the major determinant to it. The huge amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is causing the climate change and this amount is rising day by day, as a result of our actions. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, generally absorb and emit the heat in the atmosphere to keep the Earth’s climate habitable. However, as we continue to burn fossil fuels, this habitable Earth’s temperature will blow up, and as a result, some species will die out due to various problems which are caused by climate change.
