When it comes to mind, most people think of apprenticeships as a thing of the past, but apprenticeships are still a relevant system. Apprenticeships are intended to build up the youth to someday be able to master the skills that they are learning now. Apprenticeships are the way to solving many problems in the world. According to Susan Ladika in her article Apprenticeships, “Apprenticeship programs offer on-the-job training and specialized education for young adults just starting a career”(Ladika). She also says that apprenticeships are mainly focused in the areas of construction and low-tech manufacturing (Ladika). Based on this information, one could come to the conclusion that apprenticeships are a necessary system in the United States. Without someone being trained in these arts, how will citizens be able to have safe roads, clean water, or electricity? Apprenticeships allow the masters of these occupations to train up young adults to someday also master these jobs.
Just like a regular job, apprentices are paid. One thing that separates apprenticeships from other jobs is that the money they make comes from their masters. The money that is made does not come from the company, the masters give their own money to these apprentices. Apprenticeships will entail the educational requirements in the classroom, as well as the training required to close skills gaps in a more efficient way. According to Ladika, apprenticeships will last four years, with approximately 2,000 hours of training, and at least 144 hours in the classroom (Ladika). She goes on to say that most apprenticeships will start out paying $15 per hour, and most apprentices will begin their career earning $50,000 per year
