Life: To Be or Not to Be One of the most debated subjects throughout the world is abortion. Abortion is the premature termination of pregnancy by spontaneous or induced expulsion of a nonviable fetus from the uterus (Dictionary). In certain circumstances, abortion could be beneficial for the mother with factors such as: age, rape, financial stability, and complications that could long-term harm the potential mother and child. Women of all ages are entitled to their right to abort regardless of how morally right or wrong it may be. Some people believe abortion goes against their religious and cultural backgrounds. No woman should ever feel cornered when it comes to making an abortion decision, but perhaps should look into what the pros and cons may be concerning the after effects of the surgery. When women are on the verge of continuing with an abortion procedure, they usually do not take into consideration many of the possible effects it can have on themselves and others around them. Abortion is considered a difficult procedure that can come with many risks and side effects, whether it be emotional, physical, financial, and or social. The decision of aborting should be thoroughly thought out, rather than made on an impulse. Without proper education and guidance, quick decisions regarding abortion can be hazardous to a person’s health. “Abortion is the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the United States. As long as women have restricted access to contraceptive choice and unwanted pregnancies, that will continue to be the case. Abortion is a very safe procedure, although there can be complications” (Magill’s Medical Guide). Most people do not know or even realize the psychological risks that follows after aborting. It is said in Physical Dangers Associated With Abortion, researchers found that 44% of patients complained of nervous disorders, 36% had experienced sleep disturbances, 31% had regrets about their decision, and 11% had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their family doctor only 8 weeks after their pregnancy termination. It is also said that 60% of women experienced suicidal ideation, post-surgery, of the percentage given, almost 30% actually attempted to kill themselves and then kept trying (Physical Dangers Associated With Abortion). Just knowing a few of the psychiatric effects that could potentially happen should make anyone cringe. Along with nervous disorders, sleep issues, thoughts of regret, and suicide, aborting is also linked with alcohol and drug abuse, PTSD, and relationship problems. “Catherine Barnard, who studied 80 women who had all undergone abortions at a Baltimore clinic three to five years earlier. Using standardized measures for PTSD, Barnard found that approximately one in five women (19 percent) met all the criteria for diagnosable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
