Is college for everyone?
I believe college is a beginning path of discovery for those students who want to succeed in life. Most of the times students who decide to attend college have the mindset that society has portrait them since there childhood which is that without academic education there is no success. Is college really worth it? College is for everyone, but in some Cases College may not be the best option for a person's goals in life. Furthermore, peer pressure is one of the main reason for attending college, college can become expensive for those with low income background and college is not the best option for some students.
The common next step to an academic adduction after graduating from high school is to attend to college. At least that is what anybody would expect from a highschool graduate otherwise any other choice would be seen as a waste of time. In some cases, students can feel obligated for the reason that they feel the pressure of maintaining their parent's expectations for them in order to make them proud instead of deciding what they want to do to succeed in life and choice what they want to do as a leaving. When attending to college you most purchase the utilities you going to need such as, books which sometimes can be really expensive even to rent. Another basic thing a student may need is transportation adding that most colleges if not every college are really far located from where a student lives. All this thing requires money that a student may not be able to obtain. In some cases, these students are obligated to work after they graduated from high school in order to help their families to sustain themselves which means that attending to college can become a really far
College is thought of as what every parent wants for their child, so they can go off andmake something of themselves. For the most part, this is true. This quote by Isaac Asimov perfectly states how I personally feel about assumptions. In any event, it is good to have an open mind, especially when it comes to people's personal experiences and struggles. It is better to be a thoughtful person rather than assuming things about people that may not be true. That being said, Assumptions about community college students are unfair and incorrect. After graduation of my high school, I’ve decided not to attend college. I spent over three months preparing for college admissions. Over three months of studying for the SAT and writing essays for colleges. But, all this hard work was blown away in just a week. The week before the May 1st, the decision day, I had made my decision not to attend college. I have decided to return to my country and start working. Of course, there was a strong disagreement from my parents, but I didn’t hesitate. For the past years, I have worked in many different kinds of places and I have faced the true reality. This made me want to attend college and brought me to Concordia College.
The main reason why people go to college is not because they want to but because they have to. Most high school seniors are pressured by their guidance counselors and parents to go to college because it is "the right thing to do." In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote "College is a Waste of Time and Money", she states that students go to college because " . . . Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized." (481) The student may have different ideas about what he or she wants to do in life, but because they think that these "mentors" know what is best for them, they probably end up doing something they do not want to do, resulting in being miserable and resentful.
After reading “College Isn’t For Everyone”, I pondered various thoughts. Some of which agree with the author. However, others may disagree with the options stated by the author. For example, I do believe that not all high school students need to attend college. Plenty of options are available such as a trade school or the military. However, I do agree that thinking about college is important. Even if not an opinion that agrees with someone, one should consider all options before making a final choice.
However, the question that does stand is if a college education is right for every high school student. From early education to secondary education, the belief that one can go anywhere from here and achieve whatever they set their minds to have been pounded into students heads. With these statements, there is always that underlying idea that these goals can only be achieved with the help of a college education, but this isn’t always the case. Counselors and teachers have been scouring the halls and classrooms in high schools encouraging the prospect of college while neglecting to offer other paths and choices that could fit a student better. Almost every person in this country can agree that school is a remarkable honor and something that is definitely not frowned upon, but the pressures to only look towards and pursue college could get in the way of what is best for a certain individual. By telling all students that they should attend college no matter the circumstances is potentially doing some of them a disservice
A great deal of people would say that earning a college degree is the most essential measure if life because it is what we would call part of the “American Dream.” We think of our future as going to school, getting into college, receiving a degree, finding a job, buying a house, and raising a family with our loved one. However, for most it’s not that simple. With so many dissenting opinions, some people question if they would even benefit from the value of having a college education. Yet the real question is: Is a college education worth it?
Caroline Bird writes the statement in her 1975 article “The Case Against College (Bird 15-18)” that not every high school graduate is ready to attend college. It is 2010 and this article is still valid today. Some of the college students I have been around were not mature enough for obedience school let alone college. A few of the points she makes in the article are: College has never worked its magic for everyone. Does it make you a better person? Are colleges responsible for your children? Are my children living in a country club? I will use some of my own experiences as an example of college life, as well as examples from my daughter’s college experience, along with my nephews as well. All to find the answer to the big question: Are you ready for a college education?
In our society, a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. The main reason people go to college is not because they want to, but because they have to. A child does not typically think about their life ahead. Although, they may not think about college, it is still there. Life ahead means getting a job to make money for everything else and if one wants a well paying job in the future, then college is the best option. College education is worth it because it makes a person better and more educated, college is not as expensive as some think, and the college pays for itself once there is a job to pay for it.
In “Should Everyone Go to College?” Isabel Sawhill and Stephanie Owen make a strong valid point on whether or not college is for everyone. For many students ready to leave high school, wondering whether they should attend college is an issue that may lay heavy on one teenagers mind. There are a few factors that could be a difficult decision depending on a person’s goal they are working towards. Some students jump right into the workforce after high school. Others may sign up for the military after graduation. While these are different options, research says higher education is very important. Higher education provides opportunity for students that attend college are giving a good shot of a better career later in life. Approaching graduation, a student might find themselves asking, “Why is it important to go to college?” The answer is that education is the most important growing factor in the growth of our country. Riley Whitman 11/11/15 Editorial Free College Many Americans today still debate whether or not out government and country should fully implement free college. Those who are opposed to this idea are concerned with quality and accountability of education for all. For those in favor of the expansion of education, free college represents one of the great hopes for a better world. Linda Lee, an author and editor, would claim that college is only helpful for the students who want to pursue a job in advanced degrees such as teaching, medicine, architecture, and the like. For many years, higher education has been a helpful tool for those looking to have a professional career, and now, it seems that getting a degree is almost necessary. In our present day it is nearly impossible to get a job without graduating college and that is why a higher education is considered to be the most valuable investment for Americans. College is so valuable because it lowers your risk of unemployment while giving you the opportunity to have your future potential earnings increased. Many Americans don’t go to college because they can’t afford it or they fear that college just isn’t the right fit for them and others don’t’ enroll because they are lazy. These problems could possibly all be erased by making all citizens in America legally required to move on to at least a two year institution at the very minimum upon the graduation of high school. Having community college tuition-free will eliminate any financial excuses against college being required for all US citizens. Alan Bloom believes “Education is the movement of darkness to light”. Bloom is trying to convey that education can help you get through the roughest of times and to help make something of yourself. College is a place for exploration and finding out who you are and what you want to be.
Although that is true for some, it is not true for all. Some would say that money is not everything, as long as they are happy. While that is true and happiness should hold a great power over people’s lives, for most, college will bring people happiness. There is a great percentage that individuals that attend college will still benefit the same if not more than those that do not attend college. As earlier implied, college is not for everyone and Isabel Sawhill and Stephanie Owen display that well in their essay, “Should Everyone Go to College?.” Owen and Sawhill say that people are actually doing some individuals a disservice by telling them everyone needs to go to college (Page 209, Para 1). In “Should Everyone Go to College?” they say this because they think it is necessary that people think about their likely education path and career path before investing so much money and time into secondary education (Page 212, Para 1). This is true, people should not invest a lot of their self before they have thought about where they want this to lead them.
