Since the first text we read, it has been very obvious that immigrants were treated unfairly from what they were called to how they were treated. Immigrants were people too but Americans treated them like animals by keeping them in pens, requiring them to be perfect in health and body, and even didn't inform them of these high expectations. We didn't provide places of rest or translators like previously promised and called them crude names such as greenhorn. Did you know that according to the American Community Survey, that the immigrant population was more than 43.3 million in 2015? Many people come to the United States to pursue in a life of liberty, opportunity, equality, rights, and democracy. Throughout history, the United States has done a poor job in living up to these five ideals. Today, we still have trouble in upholding these ideals that our nation was founded on.
For many years, America has had a misconception of immigrants. Most Americans think them to be taking up space, money, and jobs, but that’s not it. U.S. born citizens have the wrong impression of immigrants, which technically has them judging themselves because all U.S. born citizens have a family background with at least one immigrant that came to the U.S., as stated in “Religious Issues in American Immigration,” “All Americans are immigrants” (Granquist). Even U.S. born citizens have a trace of immigration in their family history leaving them with no room to judge others. Americans have common misconceptions of a lot of things and immigration happens to be one of them. However, that is not to say that it is not a fixable problem. Through the past years of politics and reforms in the U.S, we have begun to fix prejudice towards immigrants, as well as start to understand why it is occurring. America has made improvements in having equality in culture, religion, education, and language which made it a better environment for the immigrants. America managed to throw out the hardships and stereotypes of immigrants and realize how they are benefitting. After reforms were put in place to increase equality and decrease prejudice, America benefited socially and economically. Since immigrants increased the supply demand, they created more jobs. This in turn brought a rise of the economy. America made some of the most appropriate changes in order to benefit others as well as themselves. Because of the advanced reforms in America and the determination for no prejudice towards immigrants, the environment became better and America started to benefit.

Most immigrants usually fill essential service jobs in the economy, which are vacant. Unfortunately, like new immigrants throughout U.S. history, “they experience conditions that are commonly deprived, oppressive, and exploitive” (Conover, 2000). They are paid low wages with little potential for advancement, are subjected to hazardous working conditions, and are threatened with losing their jobs and even deportation if they voice dissatisfaction with the way they are treated. Many work several jobs to make ends meet. Many also live in substandard housing with abusive landlords, have few health cares options, and are victims of fraud and other crimes.
To say that immigrants in America have experienced discrimination would be an understatement. Ever since the country formed, they have been seen as inferior, such as African-Americans that were unwillingly brought to the 13 colonies in the 17th century with the intention to be used as slaves. However, post-1965, immigrants, mainly from Central and South America, came here by choice. Many came with their families, fleeing from their native land’s poverty; these immigrants were in search of new opportunities, and more importantly, a new life. They faced abuse and Cesar Chavez fought to help bring equality to minorities.

Jails were full, because immigrants were violent animals. Insane asylums were full because, immigrants were not as capable of equal mentality. Almshouses, were full of immigrants because they were lazy, leaching people who wouldn't get jobs. This may sound harsh, but this is how nativists felt. Immigrants were seem and treated like breathing debris that could stepped on without a second thought. However when so many people set so many obstacles against you, it I hard to overcome them and become successful. Immigrants were part of the changes in society, that is true, but they did not cause the change. Civilizations evolve and most people just could not come to terms with that unless they had something to blame.
The American Dream, is what every immigrant looks for when coming to the United States. But it's not all it seems to be. There are consequences, stereotypes and pressure put on the children of these immigrants. 40% of children in immigrant families have at least one parent who is mexican born. As stated by Childtrends.org. This means 40 out of 100 children have pressure on them whether it's by their parents (because they are immigrants) or by society by placing stereotypes.
I have experience the discrimination of immigration since I was nine years old. My parents and I arrived to the United States back in 2004, since then the fear has taken over our lives. I also know that immigrants risk their lives trying arrive on a land in hope of escaping from becoming victims of crimes, for protection, and the hope that their children will reach the American dream. They even hide in trucks and a few immigrants are luck to pass the discriminatory process of being selected for a VISA that becomes more complex every day, causing more immigrants to become illegal Aliens. For once the poor that attempt to get a VISA must proof to be rich because they require to have lots of money and property. After, arriving to the United States as an Illegal Alien if they were lucky to survive the 8 or as much as 20 hours walking across the dry desert, they then have to face starting from less than a fetus because a fetus has loving parents that will provide a shelter, protection, and food. On the other hand, immigrants do not have shelter, protection, food, job, language, sometimes they do not have anyone to ask for support. These complex situations destroy their mental well-being because they are afraid 24/7 of the government that attempts to protect the “weak and vulnerable” and instead harms the truly weak and vulnerable immigrants. America has had discrimination against minorities for a long time and it will continue to have it until people treat minorities with respect. Discrimination is when people treat minorities bad because of their skin color, ethnicity and the place they were born. For immigrants, the problems they had to arrive in America were not a good experience only by the struggle to gain acceptance among the population. Most immigrants came to the U.S. to have a better life and give education to their children. Almost all immigrants have experienced discrimination at some point in their life and even some are still experiencing it today. Most Latinos don’t have a choice but to deal with it when they get discriminated because they know they are illegal.
