Don't judge someone by how they look and what class they fit in.Just because they look a certain way doesn't mean they act like that. In The outsiders by S.E hinton is based off a true events that happened in S.E hinton's life in her hometown of Tulsa oklahoma. In the book The Outsiders Appearances is a major theme for the characters and it is used throughout the book. The greasers aren’t dressed as fine as the socs where the socs are dressed find and act like they have no problem.Were the greasers show their problem without trying to show them. “The rich kids, the west side socs...We have troubles you’ve never even heard of”(34,S.E). The greasers and soc’s were making a statement that when can fight anyone and we will let people know that this is are own turf. “I killed him”, he said slowly.”I killed that boy”(56,S.E). This happened because Ponyboy was getting drowned by the soc’s and johnny was willing to kill to save Pony’s life.“There was a pretty good fight while we were there between a big twenty-three year old greaser and a mexican hitchhiker. We left when the switchblades came out”(20,S.E). When this happened it was like they were going to make sure that there wasn’t going to be another guy like the hitchhiker. Violence is important for both groups because its says to anyone that face them that ha we can win and are not afraid to kill somebody to win this battle. Violence is something the Soc’s and the Greasers use to scare everybody to make sure that the greasers feel like the soc’s own
