Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is one of the most popular plays in history of literature. It portrays about romantic sad story of two young people who fall in love with each other, unfortunately their love faces lots of dramatic and ironic speculators then; ultimately their love story ends with a sad ending. Not only two young people’s sadly dramatic love story is the only one selling point of the whole show but also along the story, Shakespeare creates lots of interesting scenarios and themes which attracts many audiences to his play. In which “appearance and reality” is one of the themes well portrayed through the play. Things are not always what they seem to be , because they are different from reality. Therefore, it is important to make decision based on the reality rather than the appearance.
In the real world, everyone could have hidden face behind the wall, so it is difficult to know the real thought of a person just from his or her words and actions. For examples, in Act 3, Scene 5, Juliet tells her mother, "Indeed, I never shall be satisfied with Romeo, till I behold him--dead--Is my poor heart for a kinsman vexed.(III. v. 94-95)." Through her words, we can hear her hatred towards Romeo who kills her cousin. She expresses her angriness and sorrow about her cousin’s death that she can’t hold herself from killing Romeo and wishing him to get punished. But in reality, neither she is truly wish for the death of Romeo nor her tear is actually given for Tybalt’s death. She hides her fear about Romeo from getting revenge and her deep abhorrence toward the ironic dignity of their couples by camouflaging with her sadness and irritation of the incident of Tybalt’s death. ...tion in a dramatic and ironic way. For Romeo and Juliet, their love was their world, but the actual world they live in was full of hatred and violent. It doesn’t matter how much they want to keep their beautiful dream. They will wake up into the reality. In other words, their love is too fragile for the violence world.
In conclusion, every people have their own reality in their mind, and it is almost impossible to guess from their action and expression because not every person want to or able to show their real intention or real world. Although the emotions of the characters may be fake, the lessons we learn from the story are real. The play Romeo and Juliet teaches us that we should not to judge things from their appearances.
