Aside from all the correlation between Aphrodite with sex, love, beauty, and marriage, she is also often depicted as being worshipped as a goddess of the sea and of seafaring, war and social cohesion. She was, of course, born of the sea and is often depicted in a seashell. Sea farers of Ancient Greece looked to her for safe travels and successful voyages. Sea faring was a vital activity for the Greeks and an important aspect of society in which they believed that Aphrodite assisted them in. “Cults, myths, and images illuminate Aphrodite’s maritime functions form many different angles and her nature of birth helps to understand why she is such an important deity of maritime trade, travel, and naval battle” (Kondoleon). “The future of the community was essential part of worshippers’ concerns when they paid homage to Aphrodite” (Kondoleon et al.). They turned to Aphrodite with prayers for sex, marriage, and conception which lead to a prosperous land and people to help protect the cities. Another part of a successful city was civil cohesion. And it just so happens the people of Greece also prayed to Aphrodite for a cohesive civil community. Civil leaders, women and sailors all paid homage to her in identical sanctuaries next to each other. The women of Cos had to offer a sacrifice to Aphrodite a year after getting married to thank her. The civic districts of Cos also held a day of celebration for Aphrodite every single year. It was mandatory that Sailors offer sacrifices as a thanks to Aphrodite for a safe trip after an expedition. She was also paired with Hermes in prayer when civil leaders got together hoping for civil harmony and the ability of persuasion when discussing laws.
