A meaningful extracurricular activity that I have done in high school is the Physics Tutoring Program. AP physics 2 is one of the most challenging AP subject tests that students are facing in our school. After conquering AP Physics, I launched the tutoring program of AP Physics 2 in our school, trying to solve people’s difficulties in studying physics. Teaching a 40-minute lesson on the white-board was challenging for me, as it required scientific pedagogy, organizational skills and endured interaction with various students. For instance, I made up a sample condition of electron distribution and taught students how to figure out the direction of the electric wave, and the magnitude of electric potential, and the potential energy. Particularly, I anticipate the future experience of internship and working because that will help me to blend into the society. And the biggest autumn career fair in Rice, with more than a hundred of companies, can provide me direct and convenient channel to those firms. Apart from the opportunities offered by Alumni Association, the career center provides training regarding interview and communication skills. Secondly, the learning environment fits my goal of applying theories and knowledge to real life. I found that changing major, doing double major, or minor are possible in Rice. When I get to know about the subjects of natural science further in the first two years, I can choose my future learning direction accordingly. And a course for freshman called Engi120 attracted me most, because the professor will give a group of 5 students a particular real-life project assigned by a firm or a lab. It’s a priceless opportunity to challenge myself. Finally, the residential college system contributes to my ideal college life. Since the student population is already small, and it is divided into 11 colleges, I will have a close relationship with students studying different majors in different grades and from different countries. As an international student in America, I have been “international” since I transferred to Chengdu’s middle and high school after completing elementary school in Taipei. At the beginning, being in a completely different culture was challenging for me, because I knew nothing about Chengdu. Even though the languages used were both called “Chinese”, the dictions and accent are totally different. My further experience in Chengdu has proved I can be a competent “international” student. For example, I shared the tactics of Chinese chess used in Taiwan with players in Chengdu and founded that some tactics actually counter another, so we both gained a new understanding of Chinese chess. I’m more than ready to join the international student organization and help people who are confused about a new culture and share the customs I learned in both Taipei and Chengdu.
