The Holocaust was a traumatizing time for specific people and these people are the innocent jewish. If you remember the most innocent of them all, you would remember Anneke Frank or Anne. She said this famous quote, ¨ In spite of everything , I still believe people are really good at heart .¨ I would most definitely agree with Anne Frank based on Peterś actions. Everyone does everything for a reason. We all have different beliefs, naturally, just as Hitler did. But, I could also see how some would disagree with Anne, considering Mr. Van Daanś selfish actions. There were many good hearted acts that would make you so happy, but, when Peter was there for Anne when she needed him the most, it was very heartwarming. I think that some people think that people aren't always good at heart due to Mr. Van Daanś actions in the play. On page 120, the narrator states, ¨He goes to the food cupboard under the sink and again lights the match. Then he cautiously opens the cupboard and takes out a half loaf of bread. As he closes the cupboard, it creaks.¨ This was a very surprising act of Mr. Van Daanś. This shows that he is a very greedy and selfish man. He was instead of caring for his own son, but, was trying to kick his son out for loving his cat while his dad was trying to blame the cat for the lack of food. He is a bad example of everyone being good at heart. He would rather be full of food, instead of taking care of his own family. He is most definitely a bad example of how to be a husband and for sure a father. But, while this is all happening what is everyone else doing? They are following the rules and keeping each other safe. Although Mr. Van Daan stole extra food in the night, he was hungry just like everyone else and it was going to happen. Goodrich and Hackett changed Mr. Van Daan’s and Mr. Frank’s role, and this allows the readers to see who they really are not. Mr. Van Daan’s role is not shown as a helper, but a man who does not care about anyone. In the play, he was shown as a selfish man who loves to eat food. How would you feel if you were a Jew in World War II? Anne Frank was a Jew in World War II. The play we read was called the diary of Anne Frank. She said, "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." According to the diary she believed in the quality in people even after hardships her family has endured. Anne Frank had to go into hiding from Hitler because he wanted to kill all of the Jews. He thought that they should not be allowed to practice their religion. Because of this, she had to go into hiding for two years. Here are some ways she showed her belief that people were good at heart. The first reason is she thought of different ways to make her family happy in the darkest of times. The second reason is Mr. Van Daan stole bread to feed himself. The third reason was she found someone to talk to even when she was trapped for two years. She was believing in everyone else as they were breaking down in fear.
The most important point that Bettelheim makes is why he thinks that the movie and play are such enormous successes. He declares that the ending in which Anne says, "In spite of everything, I still believe that the people are really good at heart," is ficticious. He says that this sentence is improbable when one considers that she was starved to death, had watched her sister meet the same fate before she did, knew that her mother had been murdered, and had watched untold thousands of adults and children being killed.
The Holocaust was a time in which millions of people were persecuted and mistreated: people banned together and stood up against prejudice and discrimination by actively and passively opposing the Germans. Citizens that actively resisted used violence and force to directly attack the Nazis in attempt to save their life. Those that preferred, prepared to resist passively by not using physical brutality, but instead continued their daily lives out of the sight of the Nazis. In “The Diary of Anne Frank,” we see how Meip, a Dutch Citizen resisted the Germans passively, by hiding the Frank family and four other Jewish families in a secret annex above Anne’s father's business premise during World War Two. That’s why Frank Foley did a good job during the holocaust. I just wish other people could have done the right thing. Frank Foley was a true hero and inspiration to me.
I agree with Anne because a lot of people hid Jews during the holocaust. Miep and Mr. Kraler help the Frank, Van Daan, and Miep’s dentist, Mr.Dussel during the Holocaust. They hid them even though she knew it was against the law. They both kept everyone a secret, and they also got them food every day and snuck upstairs to the attic before the workers came. “Mr. Kraler: I must go before the workmen get here. Miep or I will bring you food and the news and find out what your needs are.” (Goodrich and Hackett 515).Miep’s first grocer hid a Jew too. The Nazi somehow found out and he was taken to a concentration camp. Another story would be about Schindler. Schindler owned a factory, and early one all he cared about was money. Then he saw all the Jews in the Ghetto get taken by the Nazi’s. He felt really bad and started to take care of his Jewish workers even better. Once all of his workers were sent to concentration camps, he went to the concentration camps and demanded his to get his workers back. I told you why Anne had felt this way during her ordeal, and what this reveals about her character and her views about life. Anne is a strong and heroic young girl who has a heart for others and she is very compassionate towards others. Which is a great quality to have in that time period she was going through? No one could have done it better than Anne. She helped people look at the good in the situations she was never the one mention the negative things. You think how you would react to this situation. The Jewish Holocaust was a tragic event in world history. The containment and extermination of the Jews and other minority groups began on January 30, 1933 and lasted until May 8, 1945. During this horrific period in time millions of lives were lost. The Jewish community alone lost nearly a million people per year. In total throughout all of Europe sixty-three percent of the Jewish population was estimated to have been killed (Rutgers University). That's a total of 5,962,129 Jews. Only 3,546,211 Jewish people survived the Holocaust. 1600 of those 3,546,211 Jews lived to share their stories of horror and survival because of a greedy businessman who needed workers to make him money. That man was Oskar Schindler. Oskar was a drinker, a gambler, a cheater, a liar, and a money hungry egoist with a taste for the luxuries that life had to offer. And he was a Nazi, go figure. But according to Steven Spielberg, director of Schindler's List, Oskar Schindler was a decent man, not a saint, just a decent man.
The people of the holocaust did not necessarily agree with what the Nazis were doing, but they did not do anything to stop them. This can be compared to the people of Salem do not do anything about the innocent who are accused of being witches. John Proctor is questioned about his wife being involved in witchcraft and he replies, “I have made my bell of honor! I have rung the doom of my good name-you will believe me. If the “killers” of the Holocaust were not put in the situations they were in, many of them would not have committed the crimes they did; whether they were killing the Jews or just delivering the Jews to camps, they were part of the extermination of innocent people. Most of them were killing in fear, they didn’t want to be persecuted and murdered so they made it look like they were for the Nazi party. Anne Frank once said, “Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.” I believe that this quote, which is saying that some people do bad things but that does not mean they are bad people, many are doing things out of fright, hoping it will save their lives, is very true. All But My Life by Gerda Weissmann Klein which is about a Jewish family, mainly on the little girl in the family who goes through the unimaginable during the Holocaust, popped into mind when I heard the quote. Also two short stories called “Tiengen” by Maurice Meier and “Rescuers” by Irene Opdyke came to mind when I read this quote.

Holocaust is a history of anti-Semitism in Europe, anti-Semitism gained their strength after World War One, Germany had lost the war, so the German people blame the Jews for losing the war, and the Jews became the scapegoat. So Anne Frank is one of those Jews who got discriminate during the Holocaust. She went to hiding with her family, and the diary she wrote during her hiding time remained after she got killed in the camp. Her diary was published after then, and in her diary she had state it “Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.” I totally agree with her in this statement.
Beginning in Act II, Anne is mature and caring. She begins to look out for others instead of just herself. She shows her maturity when she says, "I wish you had a religion, Peter." This shows that she cares for Peter and wants him to have as much hope as she does.
Anne Frank, Jeanne Wakatsuki and Elie Wiesel all are greatly affected by the war, but in different milieus and in different scenarios. Anne Frank was a 13-year-old Jewish girl who was thrown into one of the worst periods in the history of the world: the Holocaust. Though she went through awful things that many people will never experience, she always kept the faith that there was still some good in everyone. She once said, “Despite everything, I still believe people are truly good at heart.” Her diary, which she kept while her family was in hiding from the Nazis, shows the triumph of her spirit over the evil in the world even through the pain of adolescence.
“Those who kept silent yesterday will remain silent tomorrow” -Elie Wiesel. The Holocaust is a very common topic to read and to be taught about, especially in the form of fictional books. It is usually taught to make people remember what really happened in the past so that history doesn’t repeat itself. Often times, people tend to take the Holocaust, a topic that is despicable, not as seriously as it should be taken. It tends to be sugarcoated, or “fictionalized” to the point where it's just inappropriate. Sugarcoating serious matters, like the Holocaust, is surely not acceptable. An example of such intolerability is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.
