Canine distemper is highly contagious and spread by discharges from the nose and eyes of infected dogs. The distemper virus attacks many organs, and the nervous system. This virus is often fatal and if the dog recovers, they may have permanent damaged. Canine parvovirus is also a highly contagious virus and potentially fatal. This is especially important when we live in this area because it can be carried by raccoons. At one point there were a lot of raccoons in the park and in the surrounding woods dying from this virus this virus is most severe in young puppies which are not fully vaccinated. Parvovirus is spread through the feces of infected dogs and is a resistant virus that can stay in the environment for many years. And as we know, kills many animals in our area every year. This virus causes a gruesome death. Diarrhea and vomiting lead to dehydration; because of the dehydration, the dog's electrolytes are critically affected. The normal intestinal lining is also compromised, blood and protein begin to seep into the intestines causing anemia and loss of protein, and endotoxins escape into the bloodstream, causing endotoxemia. The white blood cell levels falls, further weakening the dog. Any or all of these factors lead to shock and death. Infectious canine hepatitis is caused by the canine adenovirus. This disease is transmitted by contact through bodily fluids such as saliva, urine, or feces. Hepatitis caused liver failure, eye damage and breathing problems. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which attacks the kidneys and liver. And lives in water, this vaccine is very important because we live so close to the lakes. Canine Heartworm Disease Canine Heartworm Disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease caused by the parasite Dirofilaria Immitis. The disease can infect over 30 species, including humans, however dogs are the definitive host. The most common way this disease is transmitted from one animal to the next is through mosquitoes. A mosquito carrying infective heartworm larvae bites a dog and transmits the infection to them. The larvae grow, develop, and migrate in the body over a period of 6 to 7 months, in which time they become sexually mature male and female worms.
Poliomyelitis is a virus that infects the nerves of the spinal cord, and brain which leads to paralysis and or death (Piddock, 2004). Poliomyelitis is best known today as Polio, and Infantile Paralysis. Tonsillectomy polio would take over the lymph nodes in order to spread the infection throughout the body, leading to muscle paralysis in the limbs, and in some cases respiratory failure. Bulbar polio was a much more severe form, it affected the top of the spinal cord which caused paralysis and inability to swallow fluids (Rifkind, 2005). Polio was transmitted through ingesting materials contaminated by the virus found in feces. Children would play in public swimming pools, and ingest the contaminated water which lead to infection (Piddock, 2004). After the person ingested the virus, it would travel their intestinal tract, and eventually compromise their lymph nodes, making them unable to fight off the virus. Symptoms were like those of the flu, such as fever, headache, and upset stomach. The minority of people were able to let the virus run its course and it would be passed through their feces like any other virus. Others weren’t so lucky, those with compromised immune systems were unable to fight off the virus, the lymph nodes would fail to protect the nervous system causing paralysis once it reached the spinal cord (Piddock, 2004). Rabies does not discriminate against any warm blooded mammal; all that come into contact with the virus are at risk. Those who choose to live, work, and recreation in areas with a larger wildlife population are understandably at higher risk. People should be extremely wary of unknown animals and heed behavior changes in familiar animals. The virus is usually spread from a bite wound when the saliva of an infected animal is introduced to the victim via the bite. The virus travels from the origin of the wound to nerves and onward to ultimately infect the brain.

His was once a land of luscious green landscape, the soft air turned branches into wind chimes as the trees swayed. These same trees have been bleached by the heat ridden gusts carving tortured sculpture in their trunks.
