Hannah Murray once said, “I really loved animals when I was little - my friend and I had an imaginary vet's office; we would mime doing surgery on animals. We treated more injuries than illnesses - fixing with a baby bear with a broken leg, removing a tumor. Of course, our surgeries would take about five seconds; that's how good we were. We were heroes.” This is how most clients see us, the protectors, the fixer-uppers, the life savers, and the controllers of parasites. The Christmas surprise puppies, the free-to-a good-home dogs, and the back yard breeder’s “designer breeds” we treat them all. And in most cases, we cure ailments that could have been prevented. Canine distemper is highly contagious and spread by discharges from the nose and eyes of infected dogs. The distemper virus attacks many organs, and the nervous system. This virus is often fatal and if the dog recovers, they may have permanent damaged. Canine parvovirus is also a highly contagious virus and potentially fatal. This is especially important when we live in this area because it can be carried by raccoons. At one point there were a lot of raccoons in the park and in the surrounding woods dying from this virus this virus is most severe in young puppies which are not fully vaccinated. Parvovirus is spread through the feces of infected dogs and is a resistant virus that can stay in the environment for many years. And as we know, kills many animals in our area every year. This virus causes a gruesome death. Diarrhea and vomiting lead to dehydration; because of the dehydration, the dog's electrolytes are critically affected. The normal intestinal lining is also compromised, blood and protein begin to seep into the intestines causing anemia and loss of protein, and endotoxins escape into the bloodstream, causing endotoxemia. The white blood cell levels falls, further weakening the dog. Any or all of these factors lead to shock and death. Infectious canine hepatitis is caused by the canine adenovirus. This disease is transmitted by contact through bodily fluids such as saliva, urine, or feces. Hepatitis caused liver failure, eye damage and breathing problems. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which attacks the kidneys and liver. And lives in water, this vaccine is very important because we live so close to the lakes. Many people like to take their pets to play at Land Between the Lakes, so we must insure their safety. The dog may also receive a vaccine for the coronavirus during their “puppy shot”.
