Animal Abuse Essay

Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
In 1824 a group of people started to notice all the abuse that was happening to all the animals in England, so they formed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A man named Henry Bergh saw all the good things that this group was doing in England, so he decided to open one in the United States. In Massachusetts around 1836, there was a law that was passed that stated that there will be no stoning and beating of cattle as week as dog and cockfighting. In 1866 he created a group called the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York. This organization helped end the beating to animals, end inadequate food for animals, end poor housing for animals, and humane standards for treatment of animals used for vivisection. Even after all this, the number of animals used in agriculture and research grows by the billions every year, in the United States. “Many animals have financial value to humans. Livestock farmers, ranchers, pharmaceutical companies, zookeepers, circus trainers, and breeders are among the many people who have a financial interest in the animal trade. If humans were to stop using animals, these people would be out of work. Many others would be deprived of their favorite sport and leisure activities” (Evans). Thanks to the many efforts done, by the many people in England and the United States, many other counties began creating animals rights as well, like Asia and South America. Still to this day, do animals rights organizations flourish worldwide.
