An island, a killer, and a poem. All contributing to the fact that first there were ten, and then there were none. The rather disturbing book “And Then They Were None” by Agatha Christie includes ten people, who were all sent to an abandoned island by the name of Soldier Island. They were all sent by a person called U.N.Owen, of whom no one knows. Each person was sent to this mysterious island because they all have something in common. They have all killed at least one person. Now, these characters are being killed of one by one according to a warped poem. No one knows if the killer is standing right next to him. Almost all of the characters have one theme in common. When a person has erased a life of innocence, they will never erase the guilt left on the chalkboard. This is revealed throughout the book using flashbacks, inner thinking and description, mostly from one off the main characters, Vera Claythorne. The first text structure that helps clarify the theme of you can’t escape guilt, is flashbacks. Vera keeps thinking back to when she let and innocent boy named Cyril drown and how Hugo, Cyril’s
Vera really brought out the theme of innocence to guilt, the endless road that will eat you up then spit you out. Three out of the nine text structures stood out and helped to develop the theme of the book. Flashbacks helped clarify the theme by giving background information about the incident that Vera created. Inner thinking helped develop the theme by giving an insight on Vera’s point of viewon the situation and expresesd the level of guilt she was feeling. And finallly, description helped defin ethe theme by helping the reader more understand the situation more and helps with the understanding of guilt and innocence in the story. As the storyline went on, the theme bacame more and more clear to the reader. Each time Vera spoke or thought, you could visualize the innocence left in the
