The first type of art that we find interesting is paintings, specifically kalamkari paintings, artwork done with pen. Vegetable dies were used to color designs put on the cloth. The outline and main features were done using hand-carved blocks. The finer details were later done using the pen. These paintings consisted of mostly Hindu Mythology and were used in temples. One distinctive styles of kalamkari art in India was the Srikalhasti style. The Srikalahasti style is when you hand draw an object and fill in the colors, entirely hand worked. This style blossomed around temples. The second type of Ancient Art is sculptures. One very interesting sculpture is The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya, in Sanchi India. It is the oldest stone structure in India and was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great. It was made in the 3rd century BC. Standind 108 feet tall. It is one of the most significant examples of Buddhist archal. The Great Stupa was vandalized in the second century BC. It was later repaired around 85 BC-75 BC. Body Art was another thing they did in Ancient India. A popular body art was Henna or Mehndi. Henna start in the desserts because originally the henna paste was used to cool people off. The first diamond was mined in India so India was a common jewel in India. They also used seeds, berries, clay, feathers, leaves, fruit, stone, wood, animal bones, cloth, and teeth to make jewelry. It was a status symbol and played an important role in religious ceremonial practices, and traditional Indian dances. They were made for almost all body parts and for man or women since the 9th century. It was often given to the temple by royalty as an offering to their gods and was a very important part in traditional Indian dances. Jewelry was also use as protection against evil spirts.
