Analysis of an Episode from A Visit from the Foot Binder by Emily Prager
In this essay I will be looking at, “A visit from the foot binder”
written by Emily Prager and I will analyse closely the episode in the
story where Lord Guo Guo comes back to view and witness the expense
Lady Guo Guo has gone to, to create her burial tomb. I aim to look at
the way in which this episode has been written and relate it to the
main themes and functions of this story.
Through reading this episode I believe that it signifies the portrayal
of authority both sexes have over each other, and the different ways
that each can influence one an other with it. It also bares some
reference to the dependence of both sexes and how both rely on each
other to achieve what they desire but the independence and
stubbornness shown by Lady Guo Guo to attain what she requires.
From the beginning of this section we can observe the respect Lady Guo
Guo holds for the Lord. We comprehend that this relationship is not
one for love but of convenience as this is evident from the way they
treat each other within the scene and especially noted from the way
Lady Guo Guo approaches her husband on his arrival- “Lady Guo Guo
bowed as did the entire crowd…” The use of the word ‘bowed’ shows the
kind of authoritative figure Lord Guo Guo is and also likens Lady Guo
Guo to the entire crowd I believe the purpose of this is to illustrate
that Lady Guo Guo is considered as important as the entire crowd when
compared to the Lord, the male. This is the appearance of the
relationship from an external point of view.

can see that this is sometimes only true when it comes to the internal
of a relationship between the opposite sex. For example Lady Guo Guo
uses bribery to gain control of a very delicate situation, essentially
to achieve control she would like over Lord Guo Guo’s riches and class
by putting his honour in jeopardy, which further emphasises the
effects of traditions. The thematic contrast of dependence and
independence is also appears in this scene, we are witness to both
main characters depending on each other to in the end achieve what
they both want. Lord Guo Guo giving in to Lady Guo Guo to acquire his
wish, that Pleasure mouse have her feet bound, and in the case of Lady
Guo Guo, achieving unlimited credit on what she considers as her
honour in this story her burial tomb.
Lisa Delpit’s book, “The Skin We Speak”, talked about language and culture, and how it relates to the classroom. How we speak gives people hits as to where we are from and what culture we are a part of. Unfortunately there are also negative stereotypes that come with certain language variations. There is an “unfounded belief that the language of low income groups in rural or urban industrial areas is somehow structurally “impoverished” or “simpler” than Standard English” (Delpit 71). The United States is made of people from various cultures and speak many different variations of languages. As teachers we must be aware of some of the prejudices we may have about language and culture.

The story A Television Drama, by Jane Rule is an exciting story about an unusual event, which the main character, Carolee Mitchell, experiences the end of. The story is about her quiet street becoming unusually busy with police officers, and how the man who is being chased by these officers ends up being outside her front door. Through the point of view of the story, the characterization and character change of Carolee Mitchell, and the setting of the story, A Television Drama is an exciting read. The story conveys how important it is to be aware of ones surroundings, and what is happening around oneself through these elements.
Qin Shi Haung Di was the first emperor of the Qin Empire in China during the 3rd century BCE. Born in 261 BCE, Haung inherited the throne from his father at the early age of 13 and showcased his ambitious spirit by unifying China and creating his empire (Swart 1984). While he is known mostly for building the Great Wall of China, he also left quite a legacy when it comes to his elaborate burial grounds. In 246 BCE, thirty-six years before his death in 210 BCE, Emperor Qin started planning the construction of his extravagant final resting place (Swart 1984). The Emperor’s mausoleum was essentially a small, underground city showcasing Qin’s power and influence using different artistic mediums.
In Kate Summerscale’s book, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, we are introduced to a murder case at the Road Hill House in the late 19th century. The young child Saville Kent has been murdered and who murdered him is the question the entire town is interested in. All of the evidence we are introduced to points to Saville 's older, half sister, Constance Kent, as the murderer.
Girls try to copy the clothes the celebrities wear because it is what’s considered cool. They wear makeup because if they don’t have the perfect complexion, the sexy eyes or the right lip color they are considered ugly. Society has taken away our say in what is beautiful and attractive. Society controls what to wear and how to look. The short story, “The Girl Who Was Plugged In” by James Tiptree shows how society can dominate the lives of the individual. This story shows why following societies demands can be quite fatal.
A character that was admirable in the novel “we all fall down” is John. John is the father of Will who is the main character, they spend nearly the entire story together looking for a way out of the world trade center during the 9/11 attacks. During the story you learn that John is very smart, brave, and respected. These are all characteristics which play a crucial role in saving lives such as his co-workers and a random lady they find on the way named ting, but mainly in the ending John and Will successfully escape.
Holling was a very interesting and very relatable person. He’s this pre-teen thats in middle school. He has a dad that only cares about work, his mom works around the house and his sister she work for Bobby Kennedy and she is a flower child. Holling is the only student in his classrooms on wednesday afternoons with Mrs. Baker. Half of his class is catholic, and half is lutheran, and they leave early on wednesdays to go to church.

I also will discuss why I feel Mary Pipher’s views on the toxic influence of media are accurate, and that it does affect adolescent girls. This paper will also point out the importance of Mary Pipher’s studies on the problems that today’s female teens are facing and why I feel they are important and cannot be ignored.

With the date of the poem marked as 1938 many facts about an average woman’s life and role in society can be suggested. The country had recently come out of the Great Depression when this poem was written. During this time women proved that they were just as resilient, if not more, than their male counterparts. Yet, women had a clear defined role, given by society, on how they should be even through a depression. So, despite the country having experienced the roaring 20’s which was a time of luxury, easy living, and women having autonomy over their sexuality there were still many restrictive beliefs of how women should look and conduct themselves. It is clear that tombs and burial rituals were a key element in the Egyptian society and their way of life as it ties into almost all things they did on a daily basis. Whatever a person’s status was when they were alive followed them into the afterlife. Food and luxury goods were buried with a person so that they could have it in the afterlife. The tombs became a person’s new house after they died. Therefore, making it as nice as possible was really important. Art work and clay models were added to a person’s tomb as material goods needed for the afterlife. They were also seen as decorations that kept the tombs looking nice. Throughout the years, Egyptian artworks on the inner parts of the tombs and on the coffins show a development in the Egyptian customs. Each new development was created to better preserve the bodies and comfort of the dead.
The short story “I Stand Here Ironing” (1961) by Tillie Olsen is a touching narration of a mother trying to understand and at the same time justifying her daughter’s conduct. Frye interprets the story as a “meditation of a mother reconstructing her daughter’s past in an attempt to express present behavior” (Frye 287). An unnamed person has brought attention and concern to her mother expressing, “‘She’s a youngster who needs help and whom I’m deeply interested in helping’” (Olsen 290). Emily is a nineteen-year-old complex girl who is atypical, both physically and in personality.
The Chinese burial customs of the 1890s to 1930s are very different than what we see from burial customs now. There are many different, interesting things about the early 1900s Chinese burial customs:: The steps taken when a family member dies, the superstitions about burials, and the difference between our burial customs and the burial customs of the Chinese people during those times.
