Individuals learn with time that what their wants do not always align with their needs. Time changes the perspective of individuals as they gain experience and knowledge and it allows them to reflect on their actions and the consequences. Individuals may realize that the results that they may have wanted would not have worked out in the end. In the movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher shows how Daisy’s outlook on life changes as she ages, and she realizes that her thoughts evolve as time goes on. With time she realizes that age is not just a number and that what may feel right at the moment is not always right in the long term. She realized that she cannot have everything that she wants. With Benjamin she does not try to make him remember her. She knows that nothing can change their circumstances and that it would be hard for Benjamin to realize that he cannot remember a large portion of his life. During the confrontation between Gatsby and Tom Buchanan about Daisy, she is talked about like she is a possession to be won over. During the argument Nick “glances at Daisy who was staring terrified between Gatsby and her husband” (Fitzgerald, page 143). Gatsby and Buchanan tell Daisy what to say instead of allowing her to tell her own truths, and if she does start to speak up for herself she is quickly quieted down. Daisy states at the beginning of the novel while talking about finding out the sex of her child that, “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald, page 16). Daisy is the only female character in the novel who understands that no matter what a woman accomplishes, she will always be downcasted based on her gender. Toward the end of the novel, Daisy chooses high class over her first love. Daisy makes the decision to stay with Tom even after she has love affairs with Gatsby. As the readers think about why Daisy would go back to Tom, the idea that she is trapped is a common thought. Daisy makes the decision to go back to Tom in fear. Daisy fears losing her wealth and the high social status that Tom brings to her. On page 84 Daisy says “Oh you want too much!” to Gatsby telling him that he expects to much of her. Daisy feels as if she isn’t the girl Gatsby wants her to be. It seems as if Tom and Daisy reunite after the crazy day in the city. Overall Daisy wants wealth and high class which Tom gives to her and Gatsby did not.
