By definition drug cartels are consider as any organization that promotes, controls, or is significantly involved in drug trafficking. But most of the drug cartel, also traffic other artifices. The first cartels to appeared and to smuggled drug in the United States were the Columbian cartels. Then, the Mexican cartel learn from them and then overpower them. Now, they control drug market and its transportation through the border between Mexico and the United States (a 1,900 miles long border). The Sinaloa Cartel operates like a multinational corporation as they extend their business further than Mexico, from New York City to Buenos Aires. Today they operate worldwide. Members of the Sinaloa cartels, are blood- related or they are part of the family by marriage. The Sinaloa cartel is not a hierarchical structure. They have two main objectives in order to gain power: they protect their own, they corrupt a good part of the police and the military. During his time in prison, he kept running the business by receiving and sending messages through his lawyers. He escaped prison in 2001 to be recaptured a second time, and then escaped once again from the most secure prison in the country.
