The article “Some Firms Find Ways to Rub Out Stress”, by Naomi Snyder, focuses on how different companies have begun coping with work related stress. The article begins by explaining that employers take little to no responsibility for their employees’ stress. Snyder states that companies have been rightfully criticized for this and that most companies let the individuals cope with their stress levels. She then goes on to name multiple companies who have taken responsibility for their workers by helping their employees deal with stress. This includes accounting firm Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain in Brentwood who offers their employees niceties such as free dry cleaning, but Snyder points out the most important thing they offer is a flex-time …show more content…
Large companies believe that spending money helping their workers with stress will run up large costs, when in reality, it saves them money. If companies invest money into finding workers who are suffering from a stress-related mental illness, and provide them with professional help, companies get a complete return on their investment because employees will show up for work and be more efficient and productive on the job (Bickford 17). Knowing this, more and more businesses have started realizing that stress can affect the bottom line. Snyder also expresses that stress has harsh side effects including health problems, poor customer service, and workplace accidents. Snyder supports her statements with information from credible sources including the Journal of Occupational Health and Environmental Medicine. Snyder provides compelling evidence that it is crucial that companies realize they have a moral and legal responsibility to care for their workers’ mental and physical well …show more content…
This lists includes: getting enough sleep, exercise, having a healthy diet, maintaining a sense of humor, controlling thought patterns, and recognizing responsibilities. Snyder lists these stress relief options in a friendly and relatable fashion. These stress relief options are also reliable ways to reduce stress. Unhealthy habits, such as diet or sleep deprivation, interfere with the body’s ability to maintain a sense of well-being which affects stress levels (Bickford 25). This is why adequately sleeping, having a healthy and balanced diet, and exercising regularly can all help reduce a person’s stress. Maintaining a sense of humor allows a person to laugh. Laughing releases endorphins (the body’s natural “feel good” chemical) (Bickford 25). Snyder names that finding ways to focus the mind and let go of worrying thoughts is also a wonderful way to cope with stress. Being able to think through worry and stress can help conquer problems and can also prevent burn out. Burn out can happen when a person feels overworked, underappreciated, or confused about expectations and responsibilities (Bickford 14). Recognizing responsibilities and clarifying what is expected can help people deal with stress by easing their minds because they understand what they are expected to do. Snyder delivers both business and personal solutions for reducing stress. She uses well known stress relief tactics that have

Humor has become one of the most popular tools for stress relief. Positive effects of laughter include reduced muscle tension, controlled anxiety, the ability to handle unexpected events, and simply the joy of humor. It is important for managers to allow employees to have fun. We spend the majority of our lives at work and we need to enjoy the experience.

Sometimes you blame your failures to somebody or to a circumstance where in fact, the real problem is just the way you perceive stress.

They must be willing to take care of themselves through leading healthy lifestyles including eating a balanced diet, exercising, and taking advantage of stress reductions techniques and therapies which could include yoga, meditation or aromatherapy.
