I agree with Mr. Arbeiter when he says that humanity should overcome the horrors of the Holocaust but still remember what happened. I believe that we can make this world better because of the Holocaust. The Holocaust teaches us that we don’t need so much violence to solve problems. In this essay, I explain what Mr.Arbeiter thinks about remembering the Holocaust and how humanity can be motivated by the Holocaust to fix our society.

They can help humanity be more kind. Tragedies help be better people by showing everyone violence is never the answer. The holocaust was a horrible thing full of violence and it didn’t help anyone or any countries. Also it teaches us to respect others even if they believe in something other than you. Another thing is don’t judge people because of their religion. We should treat everyone equally even if they don’t believe in the same things as us. All of the tragedies we have had motivate us to fix our mistakes. If we fix our mistakes our humanity could be so much better. Also if we remember what happened in the past we will know how to handle anything bad that happens better. It reminds the audience that while no one could likely ever be as evil as Hitler, history has a way of repeating itself. We are urged to pick our leaders carefully, to take interest in politics and choose are affiliations well. Most importantly, Tony Kushner is trying to call us to action in this play. He urges each and every audience member to avoid the pit falls of complacency as Agnes succumbs to in the play. To take no stance at all is not to be untouched, as Agnes had seen many of her friends leave as a result, but to remain stagnant, to be haunted by your fears and regrets, and to die with no one to remember you. The experience of being in the Holocaust is hard to imagine. The physical pain and fear that a survivor of the Holocaust felt could never fully be understood by anyone other than a fellow survivor. The children of survivors may not feel the physical pain and agony as their parents did, but they do feel the psychological effects. For this reason Artie and his father could never connect. The Holocaust built a wall between them that was hard to climb. Artie makes an attempt to overcome the wall between him and his father by writing the comic Maus about his father’s life in hopes to grow closer to him and understand him better, yet he struggles in looking past his father’s picky habits and hypocritical attitude.

Reading their story is sad but at the same time it creates the urge in people to stop it from coming about again. The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).
