Lizzie’s Ice Cream demonstrates various forms of leadership throughout its company. After speaking with the owner/manager of the Waltham location, our group was able to delve into this aspect of the company. The concept of leadership has been a widely discussed term across the world for many years. It was not until recently that a confirmed definition of the word was mutually agreed upon. The 54 leadership experts that composed this definition were from 38 different countries across the world. The overall consensus of leadership was, “influencing, motivating and enabling others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organizations of which they are members.” (Learnsmart) Applying this definition to Lizzie’s Ice Cream, our …show more content…

This aspect of leadership views leaders as change agents. Meaning that they provide the company with a shared vision for employees to strive for. They encourage employees to experiment and try new things to better the company for the future. Lizzie’s owner, is very open to new ideas from her employees and provides opportunities for her employees to have their voices heard. Transformational leadership’s four main aspects are, “develop and communicate a strategic vision, model the vision, encourage experimentation, and build commitment to the vision.” (Learnsmart) These terms are all used by Lizzie’s.
Strategic Vision The core of transformational leadership is a strategic vision, a positive image or model for the future that energizes and unifies employees. Lizzie’s strategic vision is to provide a service to the customer that keeps them coming back time and time again. A successful strategic vision will have several noticeable features. These include, an idealized future with a higher purpose. This purpose helps fulfill the needs of the company’s stakeholders. Being able to satisfy the needs of the stakeholders through energized and unified employees allows a company to be very successful in the long run.

The difference between the two is still a somewhat grey area but, there is a clear set of activities that differs between the two. One distinction between the two is that managers are responsible for maintaining the company’s objectives and keeping them align with the outside world. Lizzie’s manager is also the owner of the company. Therefore she has a responsibility to not only manage the company but to lead it as well. Although managerial and transformational leadership are both considered to be aspects of leadership, they are better recognized as interdependent
