In the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollan challenges his readers to examine their food and question themselves about the things they consume. Have we ever considered where our food comes from or stopped to think about the process that goes into the food that we purchase to eat every day? Do we know whether our meat and vegetables picked out were raised in our local farms or transported from another country? Michael pollen addresses the reality of what really goes beyond the food we intake and how our lives are affected. He does not just compel us to question the food we consume, but also the food our “food” consumes.
The main point of his article is that people take for granted their meals and have no idea of the process farmers go through to make our lives easier and our stomachs happy. Berry wants us to acknowledge farmers work and he wants us consumers to know more about the process and the food we consume each day. Now that I recall, we did have a vegetable garden last year, but we also had rabbits and two dogs. The story of the garden didn’t have a happy ending, but we did have vegetables, but not as good as they had at the store. Probably in the future, maybe in summer I’ll try to start a new vegetable garden and get informed about the importance of growing one.
FOOD Inc. is a film that goes deeper into the food that we consume every single day, and also gives us insight on the origin of our food from the average farmer to the corporations that have almost made a monopoly in agriculture. However, Robert Kenner exposes the corrupt ways food companies treat animals and the way food is being produced, and overall, the need to make our voices heard that we need to make a change when it comes to what we eat and how we eat. Therefore I agree with the documentarian on his point of view on the way animals are being treated, the way our food is really being made, our health, and its effect on our lives.
A major issue that is occurring in America is a phenomena known as “food deserts”, most are located in urban areas and it's difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Whereas in the past, food deserts were thought to be solved with just placing a grocery store in the area, but with times it has become an issue that people are not picking the best nutritional option. This issue is not only making grocery store in food deserts are practically useless and not really eliminating the issue of food deserts because even when they are given a better nutritional option, and people are not taking it. In my perspective, it takes more than a grocery store to eliminate ‘food deserts’. It's more about demonstrating the good of picking the nutritional option and how it can help them and their families. For example, “Those who live in these areas are often subject to poor diets as a result and are at a greater risk of becoming obese or developing chronic diseases.”(Corapi, 2014).
In our fast pace society, we base everything on time and money. This need to save money and time has transformed the way we see food and purchase food. Food is an essential part of all cultures. It plays a role in every person’s life. The population has the power to choose what we eat and how the food industry is shaped. There are many important questions that we need to ask ourselves in order to keep the food industry in check. These questions are: How do we know our food is safe? What should we eat? How should food be distributed? What is good food? These are simple yet difficult questions.

According to Roni Neff, Marie Spiker, and Patricia Truant, up to 40% of all food produced in America is thrown away (Neff, Spiker, & Truant, 2015, p.2). This wasted food is worth hundreds of billions of dollars that is lost each year in the United States alone, and creates many threats to our country. Food waste is an important and widespread issue in the United States because most of the food thrown away is perfectly fine, it could be used to feed the hungry, and the waste hurts the environment.
Pollan’s "In Defense of Food" was effective in presenting its argument. The documentary included many persuasive strategies that appealed to the reader and evoked reconsideration of food. Pollan approaches the argument with shocking imagery, evidence, and an overall presentation that provided a stark contrast between what is realistically healthy and what American society calls “food.” As the viewer I felt impressed and persuaded.

Repeatedly the news will highlight a story about the obesity epidemic sweeping the nation. Although the news and health experts bombard the common citizen with quick and easy ways to eat healthier and exercise more, the source of the issue is kept hidden behind closed doors. Before placing blame on the eating habits, it’s essential to take a closer look at what is being consumed. With rapid change in the food industry, progress must be met with caution because “The way we eat has changed more in the past fifty years than in the past 10,000” (Pollan and Schlosser). It is easy for the common man to provide the blanket statement of eating “better”, yet few actually proceed to do this. The average American has one of the worst diets in the world although opportunity and variety of options are overwhelming. Food industries are deceiving by masking the true process of how their food is produced. Not only does the eye not see how the food was made, but there is also a false sense of variety in the grocery market. The grossly unbalanced American diets and genetically modified organisms both coexist to create a greater problem than previously thought of.
Food Inc. is a documentary displaying the United States food industry in a negative light by revealing the inhumane, eye opening, worst case scenario processes of commercial farming for large corporate food manufacturing companies. Food Inc. discusses, at length, the changes that society and the audience at home can make to their grocery shopping habits to enable a more sustainable future for all involved.

Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. In addition, with the closed, controlled environment of the system, the need for the use of any pesticides a basically eliminated. An investment into a healthier America is long overdue, because we are continuing to allow the government to do more harm than good to our health. There is an issue in our nation that is attacking the population’s health and rights. The American diet as a whole is continuing to worsen as time progresses, and no government action is being done to stop it. Genetic engineering now modifies our once natural foods and subsidies are not where they should be. To first get a grip on this unacceptable problem at my school, I would like to propose a change in menus, a change in what the vending machines have available, and more advocates visiting the school.
